Page 26 of Tackle Me

When someone calls him, he excuses himself and leaves our side.

“Well, the formalities are done. It’s just you and me,” Jake whispers in my ear, sending delicious sparks of tingles down my spine.

“So, what do you have in mind?”

His hand slips into mine, our fingers interlacing, and he pulls me into a walk through the room until he tracks down the bar and orders us a drink.

“First,” he says. “We drink and make our presence seen. Then, I’m stealing you away and having my way with you.”

I laugh at his confidence while being slightly aroused by the things he says.

With our drinks, we gradually move from the main crowd to a quieter corner of the room. It’s just the two of us now, standing together, our sides touching, and there’s something so comforting about how easy Jake is to get along with.

He nudges me gently in the arm with his elbow. “What do you think that man over there, the one with the long gray beard in the suit, does for a job?”

I study the guy for a moment. “I bet he owns a chain of car workshops, but is secretly the Kingpin ruling the gangs in the city.”

Jake laughs heartily at my response. “Nice.”

“Your turn,” I prompt, pointing at a woman dressed in a glittery gold dress, her arms adorned with bracelets. “What do you think she does?”

He observes her, tilting his head slightly. “She’s a master thief. Never spends a penny on jewelry because everything she owns comes from expensive collections and museums she steals from. She may not look it, but the woman is super flexible and can get through any gap.”

I giggle at his creativity, glancing up at him as he winks at me sexily.

“Okay,” I say. “What about the young guy in a sharp tuxedo, chatting with that animated group? What’s his deal?”

“Oh, that’s easy.” He squints at the man, studying him. “Professional poker player. He’s got that poker face, you know. Makes a fortune bluffing in high-stakes games, then spends all his money at brothels.”

“Wow, okay. He’s a busy man.” I laugh, enjoying Jake’s company more than I ever thought possible.

“Fine, your turn. What about that woman with the pearl necklace and elegant updo?” he asks, leaning in closer to me, our cheeks almost touching.

I’m super giddy on the inside. Does he have any idea what he’s doing to me each time we touch? It makes me wild for him. My stomach’s twisting in on itself to get closer to him, to have him kiss me again.

He’s staring at me… right, he wants a response, so I swing my attention to the woman in question.

“Hmm, she’s a retired ballet dancer who was bought by a drug lord, and now she only ever dances for him. Or he’ll break her legs.”

“Whoa, that went dark fast,” he teases.

“Well, sometimes the world is dark.” I shrug and sip on my drink just as the fundraiser organizers begin to do a showcase of what items are on display for auction. Some people take their seats at the tables while others remain standing around.

Jake takes my glass and puts both of ours down on a nearby empty table before scooping my hand in his and leading me out of the room into the hallway that leads to the bathroom.

“Where are we going?” I ask.

“I’m a guy who always keeps his word,” he says, and before I know it, he’s dragging us to a random door at the end of the hallway.

I’m dubious about where he’s going, yet I’m moving just as fast, curious to find out. As voices reach us from behind us, he quickly grabs my hand, a mischievous glint in his eyes, and pulls me toward a door as he opens it.

I glance over my shoulder to find a couple emerging from the ballroom just as we slip inside the darkened room, breathless. Excitement thrums through me as Jake shuts the door, and I turn to a room drenched in blue moonlight from a high window. He takes out his phone and flicks on the light, scanning what appears to be an old storage room with all kinds of folded tables and stacked chairs. Tucking his phone in his pocket, he reaches for me.

“Come here, pretty girl,” he says softly. “I haven’t been able to get you out of my thoughts since the library. I keep thinking that you’re going to destroy me, yet I can’t stay away from you.”

His words send a thrill through me, but there’s also a thread of apprehension that I’m getting too deep into something that can backfire.

Before I can respond, he drags me toward him. Our bodies clash, and he kisses me. My toes curl, my world spins, and my heart races while I’m squeezing my thighs together.
