Now, I do roll my eyes, but I can’t hold back the laugh. “Gee, thanks bunches. You’re a real friend.”

Roxy smirks and tucks Willow’s sweater inside her little backpack. “So… there’s an insanely hot guy driving an equally smokin’ car outside…”

Here we go.“He’s just a friend, Rox.”

“Mhm. And where has this ‘friend’ been up until now?”

I bite the inside of my cheek. She’s got me there. I pick up one of Willow’s toys she managed to slip in her bag and fiddle with it so I don’t have to look at Roxy. “I just met him. Last night.”

Her sharp intake of breath tells me all I need to know aboutheropinion. “Clara…”

“It’s not what you think.”

I’m suddenly very aware of the weight of the bag on my shoulder, and I steal a mischievous glance at my best friend. “I had a really great night. I mean… areallygreat night.”

Roxy furrows her brow and sits on one of the bar stools at her kitchen island. “You didn’t go to work?”

I grin. “I never have to go back to work again. Not for a very long time.”

“Girl, if you’re about to tell me you got yourself a sugar daddy?—”

I unzip the bag. Then pull out stack… after stack… after stack… of cash and set them on the counter.

Roxy’s eyes bug out of her head.

I nod giddily. “I know. Believe me…I know.”

She almost slides off her seat. Almost. But she catches herself and suddenly barks out a laugh, clapping her hand over her mouth before she wakes up Willow. “What thefuck?! Tell me that’s not Sugar Daddy’s?—”

“God, no.” I snort and shake my head. “He’s not my sugar anything. And this ismymoney. Well, part of it.”

“Part—?!”

“I had to get the rest in annuity, but I’m going to transfer it out once I can get a new bank account to handle the full amount.”

Roxy leans back. “How much…?”

I almost stumble on the words. I’ve never actually spoken it out loud. “One…” I clear my throat. It’s sticking to my tongue. “One million dollars.”

She shrieks.

We quickly hush each other as I nearly shriek right along with her, and I take the opportunity to shove a few stacks of cash into her arms. She tries to shove them back at me, but I’m not going to let her refuse.

“Please, Roxy.” I practically stuff a wad of cash down her shirt. “For me. Just take it.”

“Bitch! What am I supposed to do with all this dough?!”

“I don’t know!” I also don’t know how else I could ever repay her for protecting my daughter and getting both of us out of that hellhole. “Keep it for me. Stash it in your bank; you can transfer it to me later. The less I have on hand, the harder it will be for me to lose it.”

Realization dawns on Roxy’s face. “Officer Asshole doesn’t know.”

“Not a fucking clue.”

That seals the deal. “Done.”

She’s tucking the money into her cereal box when there’s a knock at the door. We both jump, and for a moment, Willow whines in her sleep. My heart leaps into my throat.
