But, the few times it showed up on the field… fucking magic.

As much as I hated to admit it, we worked well together. Which might explain how I got picked up by Carolina. Question was, for how long?

“There’s a place not too far from here that has the best fucking tacos I’ve had, and it just so happens I have nothingto do except make sure your sorry ass isn’t alone on your first night in town.”

I started to shake my head, but Ty held his hand up.

“You’re going. Because we need a Sebastian’s-not-a-total-dickhead game plan.” His tone softened just enough as he added, “Brother, I know shit hasn’t been easy. But this,” he pointed between us, “it could be something.”

I snorted.

“On the fucking field. Now don’t go falling in love with me,” he drawled, standing and stretching. “Let’s go. And no flirting with me, understood? I have a reputation to uphold.”

“Asshole,” I muttered as I followed him out the door.

Ty winked. “I love you, too, brother.”

CHAPTER 4

MADDIE

“There’s no such thing as too big, Mads,” Jessa half-yelled over the noise in the bar as I giggled as a result of the incredibly strong margaritas the bartender sat down twenty or so minutes ago with a grin at my incredibly flirtatious and kinda gorgeous friend. Sweeping her straight as a pin hair over her shoulder, she glanced back at him with a wink and raised her glass.

“When it comes to tacos, there might be!” I kinda yelled over the music playing and people chatting with each other.

The Prickly Pear had become our favorite place to grab a bite after work when it opened six months ago, and the vibe inside the bar/Mexican restaurant was usually low key, but the small town we lived and worked in was buzzing with all the news about the new owners of the Carolina Fury, and how the new owners were basically starting from the bottom up, bringing in all new personnel.

Football fans were a boisterous lot, and it didn’t help that the TV over the bar was playing an interview with one of the new owners, Resnick Gentry.

More than a few female eyes were glued to the screen. The man was a dark, smoldering fantasy of a man. And more than a few of the men in the room were glued to everything he was saying, and everyone was voicing their own opinions.

“Ugh, it’s so loud.”

Jessa laughed. “Which is probably why Frankie made our drinks extra special tonight.”

I glanced at her cleavage, visible and out there for the world to see. “Or he liked the view.”

“If only the view did more than get me a strong margarita,” she muttered, then grinned. “Maybe he thinks we’re going to have a threesome! Which is ridiculous because even I have standards.”

Hand on my chest, I feigned indignation. “And I’m not enough for you to have a threesome with a bartender after a triple shot margarita. Jessa, I thought we were friends!”

She cackled. “If pretending to have a threesome then ghosting you with a hot dude would get you laid, I’d take one for a few minutes. But,” she nudged my shoulder and raised her glass, “we both know we like cock way too much. So, here’s to no threesomes and probably not getting laid!”

“Oh my God,” I groaned, and clinked my glass to hers before downing it alongside my crazy ass friend. With a shake of my head, I raised my hand, about to signal Frankie for another round when I caught a man standing just past Jessa, leaning on the bar. Looking like he was waiting for his drink order, his friend oblivious behind him.

Piercing green eyes shot in my direction, and the world stopped spinning for a few seconds.

It couldn’t be.

Jessa waved her hands in front of my face, deja vu washing over me as I focused on her. Desperate and definitely a little buzzed, I swatted her hands away. “Earth to Maddie. Food’s here. Grab it before I do!”

I glanced down at the mouth watering array ofempanadas, tamales, salsas, and other delicious things. But all I wanted to see washim.

I tried to look over her shoulder, but he must have gotten his drink because he and his friend were nowhere to be seen. Disappointment crept over my body like a cloak, heart pounding out its misery. The air felt palpable with something I couldn’t name. Like this was a moment I’d look back on later, and know.

My life was about to change.

The only question was, for better, or worse?
