“Aimon…”

“It’s your parents’ house, I know. I’m sorry. It’s just, some day you may want to sell it or have me move out. I can’t leave there. It has George’s chair, and all of your stuff from when you were younger. They’re memories I like being a part of, even if I never got the chance. I was thinking,” he paused as the door opened and we stepped out. “I’d like to fix up your room for the baby. I want to make a nursery so that maybe someday if I ever get to have him or her for a weekend or holiday, they can stay with me. You can both stay.”

Sweat was collecting on my chest. How did I tell him no? He wanted to make my parents’ home a shrine, and I was okay with that. But it was my shrine. My memories. My past.

“You can paint the room.”

Aimon smiled squeezing my hand. “Thank you. I have so many ideas.”

“It won’t be much longer now and then you’ll know what color to paint. Hopefully.” I stopped at the desk, smiling at the nurse. “Hello, I had an appointment.”

“Name, please?”

“Fayette Brexton.”

“Have a seat. We’ll be with you shortly.”

“It’s okay, I’m ready.”

I turned, smiling.

“Dr. Anderson.”

“Fay. How are you feeling?”

“Good. Tired.”

“I don’t think we’ve met, you must be…the father?”

“Yes. Aimon Carmelo.

“Nice to finally meet you.”

Aimon and I followed as Dr. Anderson led us down the hall into a room. Thomas and Phillip waited outside as she shut the door.

“I’m glad to hear you’re doing well. Tired is to be expected. Why don’t you take off your jacket and get on the bed. I have a sheet for you. Has there been any complications? Anything different or concerning you might want to tell me about?”

I paused as she took my temperature and blood pressure.

“The morning sickness still hits some days, but it’s eased a lot over the last few weeks.”

“That’s great to hear. Sickness at this stage is unfortunately normal. That it’s easing is a good sign.”

Aimon took my coat, placing it on the chair. When I lifted for the step, he was right there holding my hand so that I was safe. I sat down, easing my dress over my hips. Dr. Anderson fixed the sheet, bringing the dress over my stomach.

“Perfect. Let’s see what we have here.”

I reached for Aimon’s hand as she squeezed the jelly and began rolling the doppler across my stomach. Thumping filled the room on contact.

“Nice, strong heartbeat.” Dr. Anderson began pushing buttons as she moved across my stomach.

“The heart beat.” Aimon repeated. “I…I’m sorry, Fay. I need my hand back for a moment. Can I record this, Doctor?”

“Absolutely.”

At her cheerful voice, I swallowed hard. There were so many feelings sweeping through me. Amazing sex, a strange woman, the mention of a nursey, now this?

“Smile, Fay.”
