Arthur preened a little at the wonder and awe in Lancelot’s voice. But he didn’t have time to soak in it, for Aella was now free falling after slicing off the wings of one of the smaller shadow dragons that had been chasing them.

Arthur dove to catch her. Then Tristan too, who split a shadow dragon’s head in two with Excalibur. Only Dalair remained on White Dragon. No more shadows remained.

“We have to find a place to land ASAP,” Aella shouted to be heard.

“If you and White Dragon maintain your current form, I bet more shadow dragons will come. Let’s just hope that Brigid and Sai are ready with the portal when we land. I don’t want to fight off another horde and do this all over again.”

As if triggered by her wish, a small swirl appeared in the rockface of the mountainside. The swirl expanded until it was just big enough to admit one person.

Arthur dove for it.

White Dragon flew abreast of him and tilted its back so that Dalair could easily leap from the carrier dragon onto Arthur. With the other immortals on his back, Arthur shot toward the portal as White Dragon turned back into a dragonfly.

As he drew closer, the warriors, one by one, bounded from his back to his neck then head before they jumped off and directly into the flickering doorway to another world.

When Lancelot did the same, Arthur also transformed back into man, lunging after his Mate. The portal snapped closed on his heels, almost cutting off his foot in the process.

That was too close for comfort!

But they were back in the earthly realm. They were free.

Arthur crashed hard into the ground when he landed. He braced himself onto hands and knees and shook his head like a disoriented bull.

“You did it!” Annie cheered from somewhere in the periphery.

Strong hands pulled Arthur to his feet. He swayed unsteadily, both from the wounds he’d sustained but also from the unfamiliar effects of shapeshifting.

When one was a dragon a moment ago, soaring through the sky, and the next moment a tiny human held hostage to the ground by gravity—it could be a little disorienting.

“Is everyone well?” a new voice asked.

Arthur saw long white hair in his peripheral vision.

“I wouldn’t mind lying down for a while in the healing chamber,” Tristan said, leaning exhaustedly on Excalibur, which he used like a cane to prop up his weight.

Ayelet came forth and circled an arm around his waist. He immediately pulled her in for a side hug and kiss. Dalair went to Sophia, who threw her arms around his neck like a frightened girl. It was contradictory to the calm, collected queen she portrayed when Arthur first met her. Cloud came to Aella, who grinned triumphantly at him and promptly yanked his head down for a long, devouring kiss.

And that left Lancelot and Arthur, looking nonplussed at each other, not quite sure how they should behave.

“You’re a dragon,” Arthur murmured, still in awe of what he’d witnessed.

“So are you,” Lancelot returned with a wondrous tilt of his head.

“Wait, what?” Annie interjected, coming to stand beside them with Merlin, Rui and Wolfe, looking from one to the other.

“Show them,” Lancelot urged, pride and…much, much moreshimmering in his silvery eyes.

So, Arthur did.

Fortunately, the terrace of the Shield was large enough to accommodate not one, but two, enormous dragons.

A silvery Celestial water dragon and an earth-born black and red sky dragon.

In his Beast form, Lancelot felt no inhibitions, only primal instinct. As easy as breathing, he crowded into Arthur’s space, nuzzling the bulkier, more muscular dragon with his snout, licking Arthur’s chest and throat, then slathering saliva all over his horn-studded face before winding his long neck around Arthur’s until they were as tight as pretzels, locked together in an awkward embrace.

“Adorable…” Annie sighed under her breath, probably speaking in low tones to save them from embarrassment.
