He smiles up at her, charming as always.

“I’m going to grab us all some drinks,” Ma announces out of the blue, and scurries off inside, leaving the two of us alone.

Great.

“So, I didn’t want to bring this up with your mom out here,” San starts, and I prepare myself for another awkward encounter. “But do you remember me telling you about all that stuff going on over in Las Moreto?”

I instantly straighten, not expecting this to be the thing he needed to talk about.

“Yeah?” I respond, warily.

“Well, it’s a lot more than just noise now. I don’t know all the details, and I probably couldn’t even tell you all of them if I did know but let’s just say you need to keep your eyes open,” he says, the warning making my skin break out in chills.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean/” I ask, eyes wide with worry.

“Nothing really,” he’s quick to say, “at least, not directly.”

“San, you better start saying things that make sense, and fast, before I panic,” I say.

He isn’t aware that I know what the connection to Las Moreto is, or that I’m being threatened by someone who works for the head of the Cartel outfit in that town. He doesn’t need to know that. But when he starts talking about gang activity, and things getting more serious, all the while installing a home security system for us… can he really blame me for freaking out?

“Hey,” San says, setting down the screwdriver in his hand and standing. He braces both of my arms in his hands, attempting to soothe me. “You are under no immediate threat, okay?”

I nod, more so to say that I’m listening than agreeing with him.

“This is more for my peace of mind if I’m being honest,” he says, one side of his mouth lifting in a smile.

“But things are getting bad?” I ask, not placated in the slightest.

“Well, they aren’t good,” he says, rubbing his hands up and down my arms.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning that the gang activity is amping up, and some of that activity has spilled over into S.A. Now, we are doing everything we can to monitor this activity and keep it outside city limits, but you know how shit is. It takes nothing at all for someone to slip through the cracks,” he says, and I know just how true that statement can be.

“I just know that I would feel a lot better knowing that you had the ability to check in on your mom when you’re at work. I know that shit stresses you out. Plus, if anything ever did happen, this little thing would record every second of it,” he says, reaching out to tap on the now fully installed camera.

“Yeah, I guess that is pretty comforting,” I admit. “Thanks San,” I say, and step forward to embrace my friend.

Not the guy who has been trying to make a move on me, or the one insinuating we get a house together. But my best friend who had to foresight to think about me and how much I worry about my mom.

“Anytime, K.”

He hugs me tight, rocking me from side to side.

At least now, if Mateo and his goons ever try anything stupid again, I won’t have to run and tell anyone. That little camera will do all the work for me.

Chapter 36

I hear the gate slide open and bolt for the front door, my heart beating wildly in my chest. I feel like some love-sick fool. It’s only been a few days since I last saw Keaton, but it feels like much longer.

I watch as she pulls to a stop below the tree out front and my face splits into a wide grin as I catch her nervous stare through the windshield.

Hurrying across the driveway, I reach her just as she steps out of the car. I don’t even think. I just reach out and take her face in my hands and bring her mouth up to mine, sealing my lips over hers in a desperate kiss. The way I’ve missed her… I can’t really put into words, but I plan on doing everything I can to convey it through my touch… gestures and embraces.

Her lips move quickly beneath mine, and the small gasps escaping her mouth have me hardening quickly against her. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought of what sex with Keaton would be like several times since that first kiss, and the anticipation of it was driving me wild.

Taking a step, I press her back against the door of the car and thread my fingers into her hair, holding her in place as I taste every corner of her mouth. Her hips lift for the briefest moment, seeking mine out before she seems to think better of it, and drops back against the car. Still not confident in herself or our attraction to one another, I’m not sure, but I can feel her holding back, not taking the things from me she craves most. Things I want to give to her. She just needs a nudge.
