She scoffs, turning her head to hide the smile she’s fighting off. I wish she wouldn’t do that.

“As I recall, you got too showy and ended up ruining both of our cars,” she says, attitude creeping into her voice.

“I have no recollection of such an event.”

“Yeah, okay,” she says sarcastically, watching the track.

A light breeze picks up the loose strands of hair framing her face, and I fight the sudden urge to reach out and tuck them behind her ear.

What the hell? Snap out of it, man.

“You know, if I hadn’t left S.A. things would be a lot different., I say off-handedly.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Come on, do you honestly think that you would be called the Street King if I were still there?” I say jokingly.

It’s when she turns to face me, giving me all her attention as she pulls her hands up onto her hips, that I realize it may not have been as funny to her as it was to me.

“Excuse me?”

Her haughty tone is irritating, but I still try to explain myself.

“You’re only the best because I’m not there anymore,” I say, shoving my foot even further into my damn mouth. Even if it’s the truth, it’s coming out all wrong.

“Wow,” she exclaims, obviously pissed off.

“What? It’s true. I left, and now you’re on top.” I say this like it should make total sense to her, but of course she’s misunderstanding everything I’m saying, blowing this whole thing out of proportion.

“And here I thought maybe you weren’t that big of a dick.” She shakes her head, rolling her eyes.

“Well,” I smirk, tilting my head from side to side suggestively, but she isn’t having any of my antics.

“Don’t even,” she raises her hand, stopping me before I go any further, pointing her finger at me like a weapon.

“Oh, come on, I didn’t mean it in a bad way. Let me explain,” I say, taking a step closer only for her to

“You’ve explained enough. I have to go home.” She throws her hands up and turns away from me.

“Keaton,” I call out and she turns halfway around.

“You know, I have half a mind to leave this car here and call an Uber.”

“You don’t need to do that. Take the car,” I say, realizing that she won’t see my point of view no matter how much I try to explain myself.

“Whatever,” she says, climbing back into my car.

The engine comes to life, and she throws the car in reverse.

“Good night, Princess,” I call out before she pulls away, and she raises her middle finger at me out the window as she drives off.

Laughter bursts from my chest as I watch her leave, knowing she’ll cool down, eventually.I definitely had her all wrong, and if I’m being honest, she probably has me all wrong, too. I know I come off as an asshole, but I’m really not that bad. It’s just a front. Something I’ve had to do to survive in my family. Any emotions were seen as weakness, and after time, you just learn to stop showing any.

Shoving my hands in the front pockets of my jeans, I watch Keaton pull through the gate. It slides closed behind her and then she’s off, the red taillights disappearing into the distance.

I sigh, knowing that this is not going to end once her car is fixed. I chuckle, turning up the walkway to my front door, shaking my head amusedly.

That woman is something else. And don’t ask me why, but I like it.
