“Needs to?” I scoff, furrowing my brows. There’s no chance this chick has a bigger urge to race than even I do.

“Yeah, she needs to make cash fast.” Milo clarifies.

“Why, what’s up?” I ask, my interest honestly piqued.

He lets out a long breath that causes me to take pause, my eyes searching aimlessly around the room while waiting for him to answer.

“You remember her brother, Eli, right?” He asks.

“Yeah, why?” I answer, not sure what he has to do with this. Unless Keaton underestimated how he’d react to the car accident.

“Well, a few years back when he first started racing, he was catching the attention of everyone around him. Including Mateo Chavez.”

My heart stops.

That name… it was a name I never wanted to hear again unless it was to announce either his incarceration or death.

“Fuck,” I hiss, knowing this isn’t going to end well, but my curiosity is piqued. “That’s not good,” I say.

“No, man. It wasn’t good at all.”

“What happened?” I ask, bracing myself for the worst.

“Well, Mateo told Eli he had connections to bigger and better races. Ways for him to make more money more often. And Eli jumped at the chance because he needed the money for their mom.”

“Why? What happened to their mom?”

I had friends back in the day who raced against Mateo. Some people were even dumb enough to get involved with the shit he’s into, and none of them ever made it out the same. He’s bad news through and through, so I can only imagine how bad the situation had to be for Eli to get in with Mateo’s crowd.

“Cancer, man. She had to have a double mastectomy, and Keaton said their insurance wouldn’t cover it. It’s just those two and their mom, so Eli felt responsible for taking care of her.”

I understand that feeling all too well, and my heart aches for what they had to have gone through.

“So, what happened?”

“No one really knows all the details, man. All I do know is that Mateo was getting greedy, demanding to take a cut of Eli’s winnings, and after a while, Eli had enough of it and wanted out.”

“Shit, I don’t like where this is going,” I say, reaching up and scrubbing my hand over my face.

“Eli used to race Mateo’s cars while he saved up to fix the Camaro, and in that last race, Mateo called and reported the car was stolen.”

“What the fuck?” I shout, sitting up straight in my chair.

“Yeah, man. He got charged with Grand theft Auto and sentenced to 5 years up at NorCal Correctional.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” I’m suddenly fuming. That’s total and complete bullshit.

“I wish I was.”

“How the hell did he get away with that?”

“All of his guys vouched for him, and I guess he had an alibi. Checking in with his grandma or something. They had footage of him at the assisted living home where she stays.”

“What the hell?”

“Right? He said Eli had come around a time or two looking for handouts, but that he just wanted to hire him for some honest work.”

“Honest, my ass,” I swear, leaning forward and resting my elbows on the glass table in front of me.
