“What do you mean, not really?”

“I mean, no, it isn’t detained,” I snap.

“Oh no, no, no. Put the fangs away, you little viper,” he says, waving his hand at me like he can shoo away my attitude.

“Trust me, if I had my fangs out, you’d know,” I sneer, but the gleam in his eyes tells me he took that statement completely differently.

“Can you just answer the question without all the evasiveness? I’ve had enough bullshit today to last me all week, if you don’t mind.”

“Oh, so sorry to trouble you,” I snap, turning around in the parking lot until the second most expensive car here comes into view. The first being a Rolls that I can almost guarantee belongs to his dad. “Yours?” I ask, pointing toward the Honda Civic R.

“Your point?” he asks, neither confirming nor denying his possession of the vehicle.

“Must be so nice to just have an endless supply of cars at your disposal. What does it matter if you ruin one when you just have another one waiting?” I say, my voice climbing with every passing second until I’m shouting.

“Seriously,” he rolls his eyes, and I take a step closer.

“I, on the other hand, had to accept a ride to work every day this week, as well as a lift back home. I can’t run any errands. Can’t take myself anywhere.” I throw my hands in the air wildly. “I had to borrow this piece of shit Rabbit off of my co-worker,” I say, gesturing behind me to the ugly, mid-eighties, faded forest green car, “just so I could lug my ass all the way out here just to accept an offer I don’t want to take.”

“Are you done?” Bodhi asks, clearly over my outburst, but I don’t really care. It’s his fault I’m here in the first place. So, he can deal with it.

“No, I’m not,” I say, pointing my finger toward his face. “Not only did you cause significant damage to my car, but you’ve insulted me several times since then.”

“How?” he snaps.

“By insinuating that I was stupid enough to believe that the accident was my fault, assuming I wouldn’t understand the depth of the damage done, or what it would cost me in parts alone to fix, but also that you didn’t once stop to think about how this not only affects me, but affects my family.”

His expression softens slightly as my words sink in.

“Yeah, some of us are the sole providers for our families, and we can’t just brush this shit under the rug. Cool for you if you can, but I can’t, and you never even pretended to give a shit. So excuse me if I’m still a little heated and don’t feel like playing twenty questions with your ass,” I huff, brushing my hair back out of my face as the wind picks up. “Now I’m done.”

“Listen,” he starts, but I cut him off.

“Please, save it. We don’t have to get all chummy in order for me to accept your offer. Let’s just figure this shit out,” I say.

“Fine,” he says, probably regretting his offer right about now. “Do you have a way to get your car to Milo’s, or does he need to go get it?”

“I can get it to him.”

“When?”

“Whenever,” I answer, shrugging my shoulders.

“Okay, hold on,” he tells me as he pulls his phone from his pocket and makes a call.

I stand there, scanning the building behind him as he waits for someone to answer, and wonder what it must be like to race in a place like this. I’d never admit it, but I’m slightly jealous over the fact that he gets to race with Lacey freaking Breckenridge.

“Hey, Milo,” Bodhi perks up when his friend answers, his features softening into an easy smile. “Good man… hey, are you gonna be in tomorrow? Yeah? Perfect…. No, not me. I’m paying to have Keaton King’s car fixed, and I’d feel a lot better about it if I knew you were the one working on it… Exactly…”

I stand and listen to the one-sided conversation, wondering what the other half might be.

“Well, she said it’s in impound, but she can get it to you… Yeah, when do you want her by? All right, I’ll let her know. Sounds good, man. Thanks. Uh-huh, later.”

At that, he hangs up and slides his phone back into his pocket.

“So?” I ask, ready to get this squared away so I can leave.

“Have it there by one. He’ll be ready and waiting,” Bodhi answers.
