“I’m Officer Sander Harding, S.A.P.D.”

What the fuck?

Chapter 8

What is he doing here?

I do my best to stay calm, covertly wiping the sweat from my palms against my pant leg when no one is paying attention.

I can’t seem to wrap my head around the fact that somehow, less than thirty minutes after the accident, Sander is standing here in front of me, and he knew I needed a tow truck. I didn’t make a single call, and the only other person who knew about this — other than the other drivers tonight — was Milo, and it couldn’t have been him, because he doesn’t know Sander.

“All right,” the other officer responds to Sander, “well, we about had this all wrapped up. I was just asking if they needed me to call for a tow, but you seem to have that covered.”

Sander offers him a tight-lipped smile before sliding his warm hand along the small of my back. I immediately stiffen, but he doesn’t make to back away.

“Yeah, how is that?” Bodhi pipes up, smug as ever.

I want to tell him to shut up and worry about getting his own way home when Sander speaks.

“Just comes with the territory,” He smiles and slides his hand around me even further, grasping my waist possessively.

I want nothing more than to sidestep both of them and start hitchhiking, but I really don’t want Sander to get the impression that I know this guy. So, I force an awkward smile and stand there stiffly.

“So, what, you guys are all psychic now or something?” Bodhi challenges.

“Something like that,” Sander forces out. His time as an officer has hammered that polite tone into place, and dealing with assholes like Bodhi probably comes second nature to my best friend at this point.

Before Bodhi can open his mouth again, I draw my hand to my mouth and stifle a fake yawn.

“Well, if that’s all, I’m about ready to get home.” I tip my chin up to look at Sander.

“Of course. Is she good to leave now, Frank?”

“She is. No worries here; I’ll ensure that Mr. Kane gets home safely,” the short man says proudly, hooking his thumbs into his thick black belt.

The look of annoyance on Bodhi’s face brings me undeniable satisfaction. After everything he caused tonight, he deserves nothing more than to be at the mercy of Officer Fanboy.

Sander leads me to his truck, opening my door for me before rounding the hood and climbing in behind the wheel. After removing the light from above his window, he deposits it in the middle console, and we pull onto the street toward the south side of Sancte Alto.

The silence between us is filled with unasked questions, and I know it’s just a matter of time before Officer Harding makes an appearance. I take the next few minutes to think about everything that had just happened.

I’m so angry that I could scream.

That pompous, arrogant jackass has no idea what that little stunt he pulled cost me. A rich little boy like him doesn’t have to worry about stuff like remodeling vehicles, I suppose. I bet he just runs to daddy and money rains from the sky.

Then that bullshit question about whether Eli was going to be mad. If I wasn’t sure before, I know now that he wasn’t aware of Eli’s whereabouts. Still, it took all of my control not to snap in that moment.

Panic takes root, and I bite my cheek to rein in my emotions.

The money I would have won tonight was going to cover a sizeable chunk of the money I owed Mateo. Without that, I knew that he would make an appearance. I only hoped this time he wouldn’t come to my house. That is the last kind of worry Ma needs right now.

I’m going to have to pull a ton of double shifts to make enough money to get the Camaro repaired and get back on the streets. It’s the only place I can make the kind of money I need to stay out of real trouble. I don’t know how I’m going to get to and from work without a car, though.

Bodhi Kane.

I seethe at the thought of his name. I hope that asshole has good insurance because I’m going to have to use the settlement check to cover whatever expenses I can’t.

My life just got infinitely harder, and I have to blink back the tears that fill my eyes.
