I draw in a shaky breath and steel myself.

“At the strip.”

He knows exactly where I mean; he used to take me to the drag races with him all the time as a kid when dad would take Tommy to the track and leave me behind.

“You drive?”

“Yes, sir.”

I see Milo pull up beside me and glance his way. His excited smile falls the second he sees me.

“Good, you need to get here. Now.”

“Okay, but that’s gonna—”

“Bodhi, I don’t care what laws you have to break. Break them; I’ll deal with it when you’re here,” he says, and his order sends a wash of unease over my body.

Something is really wrong.

Milo is out of his car and rounding the hood, a look of concern furrowing his brows.

“Yes, sir,” my voice cracks, and I blink hard to fight the sting in my eyes.

“Good boy.”

“I’m leaving now.” I fish my keys from my front pocket and yank the driver’s side door open, Milo at my heels.

“Bodhi?” Rob’s voice has me stopping, halfway in the car.

“Yeah?”

“Haul ass.”

The line goes dead, and I feel the weight of the conversation settle over me, sinking into my pores like poison, making me dizzy with every passing second.

“What’s up?” Milo asks, settling against the open window as I start the car.

“Tommy was just air-lifted to Ocean Front,” I say, fighting to push the words past the lump in my throat.

“Fuck,” he hisses.

I just nod, unable to come up with something to say.

“I’ll cover shit here, go on,” he says, slapping his hand on the inside of my door.

“Thanks,” I say before pulling away.

I throw up a quick prayer to God… the universe… anyone willing to listen and ask them to let my brother be okay.

The flashing lights follow me all the way to Ocean Front and only stop when I slam the car into park at the emergency entrance. I jump out, barely remembering to grab my keys and phone.

Once inside, I find the stairwell and run.

Uncle Rob texted me to let me know which floor they were all waiting on. Something in me knew I didn’t have time to waste waiting for an elevator.

“Hey you, kid, stop!”

An officer must have chased after me, but I’m not stopping until I find my family.
