I whip around lightning fast, coming face to face with those pleading blue eyes, but this time I won’t let myself be swept under.

“Well, I guess that means you come by it honestly,” I say, my words coated in venom.

“I deserve that,” he says solemnly, raking his fingers through his hair.

“You deserve much more than that, but unfortunately for you, I’m no longer in the business of giving a shit,” I say, watching as he assesses me. Probably trying to figure out his next move.

“What is that supposed to mean?” he asks, irritation still simmering near the surface, evident in the creases forming between his brows.

“Whatever you want it to mean, Bodhi. I’m done,” I say, throwing my hands up in surrender.

“Done with what?” He asks, scrutinizing my every move.

“With this,” I say, throwing my arms wide, indicating everything, but he doesn’t seem to catch that.

“Fine, let’s get out of here. We can reschedule with just my mom—”

“No, no, no,” I shake my head, squeezing my eyes shut. “Damn it, Bodhi. No.”

“What?” He asks, standing there in front of me like that whole thing didn’t just happen in there.

“I’m done,” I say, and this time it sticks. His eyes flash with the briefest sliver of panic, and he takes a step toward me, but I hold my hand up to stop him from coming too near.

“Keaton—”

“You knew… you knew that I didn’t want you to get involved, and you did anyway,” I state, voice calm and low. The very last bit of energy I had reserved was zapped from my being the moment his dad spoke those truths.

“You don’t know—” he starts, like he can talk his way out of this. Well, not this time. I’m not having it.

“You reported your car as stolen,” I say. It was obvious enough with his dad’s mention of the insurance company and the claim made.

“So what if I did?” Bodhi steps forward, that cocky smile creeping into the corners of his lips.

“Seriously?” I exclaim, only partly astonished by the fact that he doesn’t think he’s in the wrong here.

“Yeah, so what? He fucked your brother over, so I did it right back,” he says, and the words carry a level of pride that doesn’t look good on him.

“What Mateo did to my brother was low, and dirty, and unforgivable. That is not the type of man I will stand beside,” I vow.

The fire burning in his eyes dims a little, presented with the way I see what he did. With the way I’m seeing him.

I know that he was only trying to do what he thought was right, but Bodhi needs to learn to think before he acts and inevitably pulls everyone tethered to him off the mountain in his blind leap over the edge. I can’t have him dragging me over with him.

“I try to make shit right for you, and this is what I get?” he asks, clearly hurt, but maybe it’s an emotion he needs to learn to sit with a little longer. He’s so used to just making demands and being given whatever he wants. I know that he’s dealt with his own brand of sorrow, but there was no fixing his pain in the past. This has the capability of being resolved, only I don’t want to now.

“You went against every wish I had, every plea and request I made. You don’t listen, and think with your heart instead of your head,” I say.

“Oh, excuse me for having a heart. I didn’t realize it was a crime,” he says, clear disdain in his delivery.

“No, the crime is that we lost the car in an illegal race. You bet the car and lost it, fair and square I might add, and then decided you were going to show him up and get him arrested,” I yell, pissed off at him for failing to see why I’m so angry.

“Who cares? He deserved it,” bodhi yells right back, throwing his hands out at his sides.

“And if he gets out?” I ask.

“He won’t,” he says, but even he isn’t sure. I can see it in his eyes.

“You think he doesn’t already have an out? You really think you bested him?” I shake my head, a sardonic laugh expelling from my chest.
