“You should probably get some sleep,” she says, and I check the clock. I have to be awake in seven hours.

“Yeah, you’re probably right.”

“Damn,” she swears, and I stop.

“What?”

“There weren’t even any witnesses around to hear you admit that,” she teases, and I roll my eyes.

“You think you’re so funny.”

“I know I am,” she said matter-of-factly.

“Mhmm,” I shake my head, happy that she’s happy.

“All right, well, I’ll let you get some rest. You’ve got some ass kicking to do tomorrow and need all the sleep you can get.”

“Yes, I do,” I agree with her.

“Okay, well, I hope you sleep well,” she says, and I wish she were close enough for me to hold.

“You too, babe.”

“Good night, Bodhi.”

“Good night, Princess,” I say, wishing I could say so much more, but knowing that now isn’t the time.

Soon though. As soon as I get back, I’m going to make it obvious to her that she is it for me.

Chapter 51

I have the day off and promised to help my mom around the house with some cleaning. When she comes out in her gardening attire, I know I’m in for a lot more than just typical housework.

“What? We hardly ever have the same day off work, and the weather’s nice,” she says, hand on her hip.

I laugh and shake my head. “Alright ma, let’s get to it.”

I follow her outside and start clearing away the leaves from her flower bed, kneeling down beside her.

“You know, it would probably be faster if we divide and conquer,” she suggests, scanning the yard.

“Yeah, I guess so. What do you want me to do?”

“Oh, I don’t know. So many things to take care of. I guess the leaves need to be cleared from the yard as well. And the lawn has gotten a bit out of hand,” she cuts her eyes sideways innocently, as if this wasn’t her plan all along.

“Just some light yard work, huh, Ma?” I laugh.

I stand, brush off my pants, and make my way into the garage. The Camaro sitting there in its rightful place brings a small smile to my face.

Things have felt a little lighter in the last few days, but I know better. I still have so much to take care of.

I grab everything I need and make my way back outside. I gather the leaves and bag them up before starting on the lawn. It’s a small yard and only takes about twenty minutes to finish.

“So much better,” my mom says as she walks over, a tall glass of water in her hand.

I take it from her gratefully, drinking half as I look over my work. It isn’t half bad, but now I need to bag the clippings.

“What all do you need to be done today?” I ask, taking another sip of the water.
