“I never asked for your help,” her voice raises an octave, and she clenches her fists tightly against the countertop.

“You shouldn’t have to!”

“What?” her forehead scrunches up, and she fumbles like she isn’t sure how to respond.

“You should have never had to ask for help,” I say, enunciating each word. “Not only should this have never been your burden to bear, but if anyone paid you a speck of attention,” I seethe, holding my thumb and forefinger close together, “they would have been able to tell that you were fucking drowning.”

“I am not drowning,” she says, teeth clenched tightly.

“Bull. Shit.”

“Seriously?”

“You claim that blonde asshole is your best friend,” I say, and her eyes widen in anger.

“You leave Sander out of this.”

“Yet, if he were really your friend, he would have realized that something was going on,” I say, jabbing my finger in her direction.

“I never told him,” she says defensively.

“You never told me either, and I still knew something was going on from that very first night,” I admit.

“The fuck you did,” she rolls her eyes.

“I did. I may not have known the what, but I still saw it in the way you kept yourself guarded,” I explain, lowering my voice.

“Oh whatever,” she snaps.

“You don’t have to believe me, but you do have to accept the fact that I’m here and I want to help you. In any way that I can,” I inject as much sincerity into my voice as I can in the moment, but it isn’t enough.

“Bodhi, if I wanted your help, I would have asked for it,” she snaps.

“Unbelievable.” I toss my hands up in the air.

“No, what’s unbelievable is how you never listen,” she says.

“I never listen? Seriously? I’m right here, baby, all ears. If you have something to say, please, be my guest,” I say, spreading my arms wide.

“Oh my God,” she growls.

“Don’t you ‘Oh, my God’ me,” I say in annoyance.

She exhales loudly through her nose, glaring at me from her side of the counter.

“I’m going to say this… one more time. I do not want your money. I do not want your help with Mateo. I don’t want you interfering,” she says slowly.

“So what? I’m just supposed to stand by and watch you struggle?”

“Yes.”

I just shake my head, completely at a loss here.

“I don’t even know what to say to you,” I scoff and shake my head, looking off out the kitchen window at the city lights on the horizon.

“Bodhi,” she says, calling me back to her, her voice much calmer than it was a moment before. “I can’t afford to be indebted to you any more than I already am.”

I jerk my head back, completely thrown off guard.
