Bodhi leans in and grabs a few of his belongings before pulling the keys from the ignition. Mateo struts over, that shit-eating grin on display. I just want to smack it right off his face.

“What happened, Mami? I thought you were supposed to be some kind of royalty out here?” Mateo chuckles, this whole situation funny to him.

“That’s enough,” Bodhi growls, standing up and peering over the top of the Subaru at Mateo, fire burning in his eyes.

Mateo smiles, but the humor is gone.

“Yeah, that is enough. I’ll take my car now.”

Bodhi grips the keys tightly in his hand, and I say a silent prayer, hoping that he doesn’t vault the keys at Mateo’s head.

“Here,” he says, tossing them over the hood to Mateo.

“I trust you can find your way back home, güero?” Mateo asks, not that I thought he really gave a shit whether Bodhi had a way home. He just wanted to rub it in.

“Yeah, no worries,” Bodhi said, his tone a clear indication that he was doing everything he could to stay calm.

Mateo nodded before cutting his eyes toward me.

“What about you, Mami? You want a ride?” His suggestive tone leaves nothing to the imagination. I know exactly what he’s doing, and I am not about to play into it.

Bodhi looks like he’s about to lunge, so I step forward, weaving my arm through his and leaning into him.

“I’ve got all the ride I need, thanks,” I say, arching a defiant brow at him.

He laughs, clearly amused, but I know Mateo enough to know that this isn’t the last we’re going to see or hear from him. I just hope that when he makes another appearance, I am better prepared for it.

Mateo tosses the keys to one of his goons standing behind him in the crowd. His crew was here with him, and I didn’t even know their faces. They could literally be anywhere, and with one word, they would be on us.

“Let’s go,” I say under my breath, tugging on Bodhi’s arm.

With a slight nod, he closes the car door and steps back.

“I’ll be in touch about that title, Güero,” Mateo calls out.

Bodhi just nods and turns away, taking long strides back to the car he arrived here in, and I have to speed walk just to keep up with him.

He wordlessly opens my door, closing it after I slide in, and then dumps the few belongings he pulled from the Subaru into the back seat before climbing in and starting the car.

“Bodhi—”

“Not yet, babe,” he says quietly.

So I sit there in silence while he drives, completely unprepared to deal with the fallout.

Chapter 46

Keaton and I haven’t said a word since we left the race.

I know she probably thinks I’m mad at her, but that’s the furthest thing from the truth. I’m pissed at myself, and I know if I open my mouth, I’m just going to end up saying something stupid, and I don’t want to fight with her. Even though I know she was right, and this whole night could have ended so much worse. I have an idea though, one that might buy her a little more time. I just hope that doesn’t blow up in my face, too.

I pull up outside my house and kill the engine, grabbing the keys and stepping out. Keaton follows me inside, rigid and on guard.

I hate it.

It’s like we’ve taken ten steps back.

I head into the kitchen and pull a beer from the fridge, tipping one toward her in offer, but she declines with a slight shake of her head.
