The hair on the back of my neck stands straight up. I follow Keaton’s gaze and see him approaching, like he doesn’t have a care in the world.

Mateo fucking Chavez.

Every instinct in me tells me to lunge. To rip this motherfucker’s head off his shoulders. He knows who I am. The look in his eyes says that much.

“Awe, you looked surprised to see me. What? You thought I wouldn’t hear about this? Thought you’d make a little cash on the side and not pay your bills?” He tries to step up to her, but I’m not having it.

I pull her behind me, side stepping until he and I are nose to nose.

“I’d step the fuck back if I were you,” I hiss between gritted teeth, reigning in my rage the best I can.

“Oh? What’s wrong, güero? You her knight in shining armor or something?” Mateo says, lifting his chin and looking down his nose at me.

“I’m whatever the fuck she needs me to be,” I say, hating how calm he is. The smile on his face says he knows she’s filled me in, and he’s just waiting to see what I do about it.

“We don’t want you here,” I say through gritted teeth, trying my best not to lose my cool and cause a scene.

“We?” He chuckles, disbelief coloring his expression.

“We,” I say, leaving no room for misunderstanding.

He twists his mouth wryly and raises his brows in mock humor, but his eyes reflect all the annoyance he feels at my confrontation.

“Well, this isn’t between we,” He states.

“It’s about to be.” I step closer, and he laughs.

Keaton reaches out, her hand on my arm tugging me back. Mateo notices and laughs, only making me want to bash his teeth in that much more.

“Listen,” he says, hands tucked away in his pockets, not a worry in the world, “You can step out of my way and let me take care of my business…”

“Not fucking happening,” I interject.

“Or… we can settle this another way,” he says.

“Let’s go,” I say, spreading my arms wide in invitation, but he only laughs.

“Bodhi, stop,” Keaton hisses behind me, and I see now that we’ve drawn the attention of the crowd around us.

“Yeah, Bodhi… stop,” Mateo antagonizes.

Keaton’s grip tightens on me, and I turn my head enough to acknowledge her.

“Let’s just go,” she insists, but I’m not about to let this asshole ruin tonight.

“No, you came here to race—”

“Now I don’t want to,” she argues, but I’m past the point of reason. This piece of shit threatened my girl and has the balls to walk up in here and harass her publicly. He deserves everything he has coming to him.

“You’re gonna race. Don’t let him bother you,” I throw my hand in Mateo’s direction and watch her flick her eyes toward him for the briefest second before dropping her gaze.

“Yeah, Mami, don’t let me stop you. Go. Race. Make that money. Dios knows you’re gonna need it,” he says, the threat lingering in the air between us.

I lunge, only to be held back by Deacon and some of the other onlookers.

“Bodhi, stop,” Keaton steps into my line of sight, forcing me to meet her wild eyes. “He isn’t worth it.”

“Listen to your girl, güero. This beef ain’t with you,” he says, smirking as he looks down at Keaton, who now separates the two of us.
