“So, you get off soon? We could grab a beer over at Lucky’s,” I suggest.
He hesitates, a mischievous look glinting in his eyes.
“What? You got something else going on?”
“Well,” he puffs his cheeks out, pursing his lips as he blows a breath out through them, cocking his head from side to side like he is weighing his words in his head.
I’m about to tell him to just spit it out when I put it together.
I glance between him and the Chevelle several times and a wide grin splits my face in two.
“Dude, no,” Milo warns, taking a step toward me.
“Yes,” I nod enthusiastically.
“You can’t.”
“Like hell I can’t,” I say in mock offense.
“Uh, you literally can’t.”
“Are you?”
“Yeah, but I’m allowed to.”
“So am I,” I say, trying to be reassuring but not succeeding in the slightest.
“I’m pretty sure there’s a whole rulebook on why you’re not,” he says, crossing his arms.
“No, I don’t think there is,” I shake my head.
“Did you even read the rulebook?” his eyebrows arch in question.
“I skimmed it,” I say, waving off his concern.
“Doubtful.”
“Hey, I read,” I say, pointing to the center of my chest, right where he’s attempting to jab me with a figurative knife.
His disbelieving stare says it all.
“As I recall, you’re prohibited from racing anywhere that isn’t a sanctioned track.”
“Semantics. Where’s the race?” I rub the palms of my hands together in anticipation.
“Dude, you can’t race. What if you get caught?” Milo asks.
“I won’t,” I reassure him.
“Fuck, man, I can’t let you go out there and jeopardize shit,” Milo sighs, crossing his arms over his chest.
“You’re not letting me do shit, and if you don’t tell me, I’ll just follow you,” I say, and smile, knowing I’m well on my way to whipping some ass tonight.
“Jesus,” he scoffs, “why do you always have to be a pain in the ass?” He rolls his eyes and walks back around to the front of the car.
“Just comes naturally, I guess,” I shrug. “Now, how much longer until you’re done here? We have a race to get to.”
