“Excuse me?” I say, hackles up and ready to fight. Maybe it’ll put a stop to anything that’s forming between us. I’m a mess and so is my life, and he doesn’t need me adding to it with my drama. And I don’t want him getting in my way as I try to figure my own shit out.

“You heard me. Stop acting like you aren’t present for any of the shit going on between us. It’s okay to be scared—”

“I am not scared,” I lie, clenching my fists at my sides and fighting off the sting forming at the corners of my eyes.

“Then what is it?” he asks, throwing his hands up at his sides.

“I can’t do this right now, Bodhi. I need to leave,” I say, and turn to walk away, only for him to rush around the back of the car and stop me in my tracks.

“Whoawhoawhoa, can’t do what?” he asks, panic in his eyes.

“This,” I say, gesturing to the space between us and widening it to encompass the room around us.

“Princess, you’re going to have to be a little more specific with me, because I thought we already figured this shit out, or am I just misremembering everything?”

I roll my eyes, praying that the tears don’t come.

“You must be,” I snap.

“Oh, is that it? I just made up all of those late nights on the phone? All the text messages? I have them on my phone if you need me to refresh your memory,” he continues, backing me up further into the garage with every step he takes toward me.

“Seriously?”

“If that’s what you need,” he says and reaches for his phone.

“Oh my God, stop. You’re being ridiculous,” I say, shaking my head at his outburst.

“Me? I’m being ridiculous? You’re the one who started this,” he says, voice rising in anger, and I can’t really blame him. He’s right. But now I feel backed into a corner, and all I can think to do is fight my way out.

“Oh please, I am not,” I shout, but he just continues to talk over me.

“I knew you had shit to deal with in the beginning, and as much as I wanted you, I told myself I could settle on just being friends. But you’re the one who kissed me. You’re the one who waved the green flag, and now you want out? Why?”

“Bodhi,” I sigh, not wanting to admit that things would be easier for him if we just went our separate ways, but too afraid to make a decision I know I’ll regret.

“No,” he says, lowering his voice.

I back up against the workstation along the back wall, the cool countertop pressing into my back. He steps closer, his chest a mere inch away from mine as he looks down at me with heated eyes.

“You’re the one who agreed to work things out,” he drops his head, hovering his lips over mine as he speaks.

“You're the one who decided to grind this perfect ass on my dick back there,” he slides his hand over my hip until he’s cupping my ass in one hand, caging me in with the other.

“You’re the one who asked me to touch you.” He leans into me, his hips pressing into mine. He’s still hard, and as much as the feeling of it beneath me made my stomach flutter, having it pressed against my lower stomach has me squeezing my thighs together, seeking out relief from the building ache.

His eyes drop, catching the movement, and the barest smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth before he continues.

“You are the one who gave the okay when I slid my hand between your legs, pussy wet and needy. I bet it’s still wet for me, huh, baby?”

I take a stuttering breath, my mind a lust filled fog as I try my hardest to remain composed.

“Even now, when you tell me you don’t want this, I know you do. I can feel it, and I know you can, too.” The tip of his nose ghosts over my cheek and down my jaw. He presses soft kisses to the side of my throat, and I swallow hard, curling my hands into fists at my sides.

“So why do you say you want to leave when I know you want to stay?” His hand squeezes my ass, effectively pulling me into his erection, and I feel the moan lodged in my throat, fighting to come out.

“Bodhi, I can’t… it’s too much. I have to focus,” I say, wholly unconvincing to even my own ears.

He pulls back enough that he can look down into my eyes, and like a light switch being flipped, his eyes spark with understanding.
