“Yeah, everything is good. Listen, I’ve been going over an idea that may be the solution to all of your concerns, but I need to run some numbers and check a few things out before we get too excited about it. I don’t want to get your hopes up for nothing,” he says, and the night and day behavior between him and his brother is crazy.

“Okay,” I draw out the word like a question, not sure what he’s trying to get at.

“Well, I was going through some files and information about Nana and Pops, trying to see how many birds we can knock out with a single stone, and I found something,” he says, and the tone of his voice has me sitting up straighter in my seat.

“What did you find?”

“Paperwork that shows that their house and property belong to you,” he says, and I feel my heart stop in my chest before picking back up and beating double time.

“It what?”

“It belongs to you, Bodhi. They left it to you in their trust,” he says.

“What trust?” I ask. This is the first I’m hearing of any of this. Though, I haven’t really been present in matters of my family for a while now, so who knows for sure.

“It’s like a will, but for assets, basically.”

“Will? But they aren’t dead,” I say, confused over how any of that works.

I guess I need to look into that eventually. I know I’m young, but if I get the chance at a future with Keaton, I don’t want her to ever have to worry about a thing. Maybe I’ll ask Rob to help me figure all of that out one of these days.

“True, but it states that after they were moved to the retirement facility, you were to receive the house and property on your twenty-first birthday. I guess they figured that if they weren’t living in it, that you might want it,” he says.

So all of this time, I could have been living in their house? I mean, I make enough money that I don’t need the house. I was able to buy mine after just one year of racing with Kane’s, but to know that I had the option to…

“Why am I just now hearing about this?” I ask, knowing the answer before he even says it.

“Thompson hid the file away after he had them relocated to that retirement place. It looks like their house has been sitting there empty for the last two years.”

I think back, remembering that dad had Nana and Pops moved shortly after Tommy died. It felt like I was losing everyone around me.

“I’d say that he wanted to keep you close, where he could control you better,” Rob says, disgust clear in his voice.

“That definitely sounds like him,” I say, not surprised in the slightest. Although, everything about the house is news to me.

“Yeah, well, screw him. If you want the house, I’ll start looking into the process of signing it over to you.”

I sit there a little stunned, not really used to anyone sticking up for me or defending me in any way. It’s odd, but in a refreshing sort of way.

“You do want the house, right?” he asks when I don’t immediately respond.

“Uh, yeah. Yeah, that’ll be great. I don’t exactly need the house, but it might be nice to see if maybe we can bring Nana and Pops back home. Maybe hire help to visit every day or something,” I say, mostly just thinking out loud.

“That would be nice,” he agrees, and I can hear the smile in his voice. “How’s Keaton?”

“Still unconscious, but otherwise in good condition. She’s pretty banged up, but it’s a miracle she didn’t suffer worse than a fractured wrist,” I say, watching her as she lay there.

If it weren’t for the bruises marring her face, it would look like she was only sleeping.

“Well, that’s good then. I’m sure she’ll wake up in no time at all,” he says, and I know it's more to keep me at ease than anything else.

“I’m sure she will,” I agree anyway. “She’s a fighter.”

A short silence passes between us before he says, “Well, I’ll let you go then. If you need anything at all, just call me.”

“I will,” I say.

“I’ll let you know when I figure something concrete.”
