Who was the we who were going out to dinner?

“I…” Thinking seemed to get harder every time he smiled and I found myself handing over my phone. “Thanks.”

No, that hadn’t been what I’d been going to say.

Right?

I wasn’t mentally prepared to have dinner with that many people who’d known what I was curious about.

Was I?

Kenton didn’t seem to notice I was having a mental breakdown, or maybe he’d just decided that ignoring it was the safest option. He delt with that kind of insanity a lot in his line of work, so he’d probably had lots of practice. “Here you go. I’m in there as Pup Kenton and I texted myself.”

He looked very proud of himself as he handed back my phone and being mean would’ve been like kicking a puppy, so I found myself nodding. “Thanks.”

Had I just agreed to go?

What kind of things did they do when they went out?

Did they keep their clothes on?

Did dinner mean dinner like a regular person would do it?

“It’s going to be great.” Giving me a wave, he stepped back into the hallway. “I have to go find my pants. I’ll see you later, but text me if you need help getting your gear on. Tails can be tricky the first time. Just remember that lube is your friend.”

Oh god.

Had my neighbors heard that?

Before I could decide what the reasonable response to that should be, he’d started bounding down the stairs mumbling something about needing to find his housekeys and I thought I heard something about his dick not fitting in his pants right, but I might’ve misunderstood that part.

Closing the door and hiding seemed like a good idea, so I shut it and made sure I locked it just in case he came back. But that was when all functioning stopped and I just walked over to the couch. Once I was buried under the blanket and the real world felt very far away, my heart stopped pounding so hard.

“I think I’ve missed something important.” Leif’s dry tone had me stretching my arm out from under my makeshift fort and pointing toward the door. “Thank you.”

I could hear him walking down the stairs and moving around the house, but he was quiet until he found the box. “Ah. I see the issue.”

The sounds made me think he’d picked up the box and moved it to the table, but I wasn’t completely sure. “Did Eli bring it over?”

Shaking my head, I knew I’d have to do better or he’d either get frustrated or worried. Neither of those outcomes would be good, so I took a breath. “No, they’re having some problems at work so he sent over one of the models…one of the pups.”

And without his hood, I couldn’t tell which pup it’d been.

I needed to stalk the website as well as Leif had if I was going to be expected to recognize everyone with their clothes on.

Leif made a slightly strangled sound that could’ve been a laugh, but he managed to hold it back fairly well, so I didn’t start planning his murder right off the bat. “Oh, that must’ve been interesting.”

Nodding, I decided that was the nicest way to have worded the description. “Yes, and he’s decided we need to come have dinner with some of them next week. He’s excited about it and even put his number in my phone.”

Leif was very quiet for a few seconds. “Was he flirting with you?”

What?

That was what he’d gotten from it?

“Um, no?” I tried to walk through the conversation in my head. “I don’t think so. It wasn’t a here’s my number baby kind of situation. He wanted me and my Handler to come hang out with some of the people he knows.”

Yes, there’d been no sexual overtones even if he had offered to help me with my tail. But since I wasn’t sure how that would go over, I didn’t volunteer that part.
