“Can you take over now?” I asked. “You can even go in and say that you just took a personal morning. You can start now, right?”

She looked at me as though she was completely hurt, and I held her gaze.

“You were so sloppy and lackadaisical about this. If this was your actual job and your reputation was on the line, you would have behaved better, wouldn’t you?” she asked.

I could hear the anger and accusation in her voice, and although I knew that there was an element of truth in it, I knew as well that I busted my ass more than I would have if I was working for someone random because her reputation was what was at stake, and so I couldn't help but take offense to it.

I, however, couldn’t argue with her, so I just rolled my eyes and returned to my chores.

“You're rolling your eyes?” she said. “Really? You're supposed to do this properly and hand the job back over to me properly as well. What the heck are you doing? If you knew you didn't want to attempt to help me properly from the beginning, then why did you? You just went over there and made a complete mess.”

I stopped then and sighed and then turned to her.

“Can you get out?” I swore at her. ‘I don’t want to deal with you right now.”

She gave me a murderous look, but she didn’t argue any further. Instead, she turned around and would have slammed the door behind her if it wasn’t so heavy.

Afterwards, I seemed to have lost my energy completely, so even though I wasn't done yet with my chores and my living room still looked a mess, I took off the gloves and went back to bed. This time around, as I shut my eyes, I didn't fight thinking about him.

I understood that it was fresh and that it would take a little while for me to get over all of this. I was certain that in a week at most, I would be perfectly fine, and that he would be nothing more than a distant memory.

Chapter 50

Lucien

Ihad never felt so distracted before. However, every time my door was knocked on and the new personal assistant that was brought in for the day came in, I didn't quite know how to contain myself. I kept staring at her, even though I didn't want to, until eventually, I just dismissed her. I could handle myself for the day, and despite Rosie's profuse apologies and unhappiness, I was glad for the reprieve. Plus, I needed to be on my own for the day anyway.

I wasn't even sure why I felt so restless and sad because even though we had both been nearly coherent the previous night enough to hear our agreement to our continued relations, a part of me wondered if I would ever see her again.

This made absolutely no sense, though, because I was aware of the reason why she wasn't in the office, and I had even scolded her lightly about not properly handing it over to Human Resources before her exit the previous day.

I knew she had eventually made her decision late at night and perhaps didn’t want to come in to clarify it, but she could have called. She was much more thorough than this, and for a while, it made me wonder if she was alright.

After lunch, I picked up the phone and called her. I had been seated at my desk when I placed that call, but as soon as it started to ring, I understood that I was too nervous to sound as unbothered as I usually was. So, I rose to my feet and headed over to the windows.

She didn't pick up, and sadly, even after the line disconnected, I held the phone against my ear. After a deep sigh, I pulled it from my ear and contemplated calling again. However, just at the last moment, I stopped myself.

There was no need. I was certain, I had put an unnecessary amount of pressure on her the previous day by even suggesting it, and I didn't want to do that again. And since what I was most concerned about currently was the fact that she was safe, I called Felix instead. He picked up instantly, as though he was expecting my call, however, I didn't read into it.

“Sir,” he greeted, and I nodded in response.

“Can you confirm quickly for me that Sophie is alright? She didn't come into work today, but I want to make sure that she's going about her day normally.”

For a second, he was quiet, and I wondered why.

“Felix?” I called, and he soon responded.

“Um... sir, I’ve kept my eyes on her.”

I had told him to lax a bit on this, but I knew that he knew her personally, so perhaps he wanted to be sure that she was alright.

“Is she alright?” I asked. “And after now, don't watch her anymore. I don’t want to invade her privacy anymore.”

“Alright sir, but are you aware that she has a twin sister?”

For the first few seconds, the words flew over my head as I turned around to return to my desk; however, just as I was seated, I understood what he was saying, and something seemed to strike my head with the force of an anvil. However, I wasn’t exactly sure what it was and seemed unable to put actual words to it.

I thought hard, and he waited in silence until eventually, I gave up and decided to listen to what he had to say.
