“Sure, go rest, but please stay on this. Lucien is waiting for a final response.”

“I will,” she said. “I know how important this is; we’ve been working on this gradually for about a year now.”

I continued to peruse the documents, and soon dinner was served.

It was quite exquisite with a serving of pecking duck, noodles, and fried rice. It was all so delicious and even though I tried to contain my hunger to appreciate the meal, I still ended up nearly licking my plate clean at the end.

Sighing I nodded in appreciation and sent a word of thanks to Sophie via text.

Me: Thanks, this flight should almost be enough compensation for the torture this week is going to be.

She almost immediately responded.

Sophie: Please stop complaining and get back to work.

This made me smile but I did comply.

I turned off my wifi and began to read the reports once again in preparation but I was too detached now from the day's business to concentrate.

I struggled for about an hour and right in the midst of it all, I got bored and fell asleep.

Chapter 9

Lucien

Inever quite could sleep very well on planes or flights.

Earlier on in my career, I had focused on reading and catching up on work, but now that there was nothing to do, I found myself restless in bed.

Lying dormant in that way pointlessly and for hours at a time frustrated me to no end, so I eventually got up and headed out.

It was easy to tell myself that I wasn’t also curious about how she was faring or what she was up to because that would be an outright lie, and this was confirmed when I arrived in the cabin and saw her head resting against the window.

She had a can of cola open by her side and her laptop as well, and I couldn’t help but worry that her hand was going to swing while asleep and her motherboard would be fried. And so I headed over and as quietly as was possible pushed both out of the way. My gaze couldn’t help but go to her then and it lingered.

This had never happened before but I couldn't help it.

She wore a bit more makeup than usual I realized.

The thick line that extended past the corner of her eyes and the slight pink shimmer all over it was quite interesting to see.And then there was a soft shade of pink on her lips and her flushed cheeks.

As though sensing my presence or scent, she stirred, and I was forced to quickly move away, before I could completely, however, her eyes came open. I didn’t intend for her to notice me or to give an explanation. Instead, I took the Coke along with me and instantly rejected it.

Especially when our male flight attendant Samson got up and came over to retrieve it from me.

It wasn’t even empty which made me all the more certain that I had done something very unnecessary but I couldn’t overly chastise myself for this so I headed to the bathroom to get my bearings back. I was exhausted, but I knew that only exercise could get me the rest I needed, so I simply headed back to the cabin and picked up my laptop for work.

She kept drifting in and out of sleep, trying to find the most comfortable angle until eventually I couldn’t stand it any longer.

“Why don't you go in to sleep properly?” I said. “You know how you usually are with jet lag and right now is the perfect time to rest up. We’ll get to Heathrow at nine am and you’ll be refreshed for the rest of the day.

She stared at me then as though she couldn’t believe my offer and then she straightened and turned her face away.

She began to type then on her phone, and a few minutes later she looked up at me. Once again I noticed this even though I wasn't looking directly at her, but when she did it a few more times I decided to save her the misery and me the distraction.

“The offer's still valid. Please go ahead to sleep.”

Her lips froze open for a few seconds and then she replied quite sheepishly.
