Maybe I just want him to beg. I like this new power, the way I can influence his emotions — with the way he treats Leo, and now this.

I hold his whole life in my hands right now, and it might be heavy, but it feels good.

He closes in on me, tilting my chin up to meet his gaze. “I need this.”

“And what do I get out of it?” I demand, even as my breath hitches from his proximity.

He sighs. “I’ll double your wage. I’ll treat any public outings we make as work time and pay you for them. The suite will belong solely to you at no cost. Permanently, regardless of how long you continue to work for me as Leo’s nanny.”

My chest flutters at that. The suite is the place where I feel safest, knowing Roman has round-the-clock security and Elio could never get in. I’m doing much better on the money front, but I’d like to keep building up my savings, restore my finances to what they once were. I need a new car. I need to build a life again.

He can’t know what the offer means to me — but I do. I know it’s not one I can turn down, not even when my pride screams at me to say no.

A moment ago, I held his life in my hands. Now, he’s taken hold of mine in an iron vice.

“You’re that desperate?” I whisper.

He tips his head, gaze dipping to my mouth. “I am.”

I don’t think he’s still talking about the fake marriage. Hunger is written all over his face, and I chafe my thighs together to relieve the pressure building between them.

It does nothing to ease the ache.

When his tongue darts out, I feel my pulse flutter in my throat, leaving me suffocated.

This can’t happen again. I can’t give in to him.

“I still have to leave.” I’m reminding myself as much as I am him.

Roman hums as though he doesn’t quite believe me, inching even closer. I step back, feeling Leo’s bed hit the back of my knees. “Tell me, who did you dress like this for tonight?”

His finger runs along the strap of my dress, pulling it back and letting go so it twangs against my shoulder with a sudden snap. My skin tingles. I bite my lower lip, another rush of desire needling through me.

God, why can’t I walk away from him? No matter how much I try, I always end up here — wanting him.

I want to drag that jealousy right out of him. I want to make him so angry that he can’t breathe. So I lie. It seems to be becoming a habit tonight. “I have a date.”

Fire flickers across his features. “Oh? With whom?”

I gulp, tilting my head when his lips ghost over the hinge of my jaw. “You wouldn’t know him.”

“Well, then, he can’t be worth knowing.” A soft kiss is placed behind my ear, and that alone makes me want to moan. I barely hold it in, shivering against his hot breath.

Professional, Madison. Be professional.

“Roman… we agreed.” It’s the best attempt I can make to remind him of our deal, but it comes out watery and small.

His brow arches with the challenge as he hovers above me, looking just about ready to devour me. “Then tell me to stop.”

CHAPTER15

Roman

Ican’t help myself. The thought of her going on a date, paying interest in another man… It covers my restless gut in thick black oil. My heart pounds with the need to claim her, to fuck away any sign that she could be interested in someone else. I want to rip that gorgeous dress right off her, wrap my hands around her thighs so tightly I leave pleasant purple bruises dappled across her golden skin.

And I know she wants it, too, even if she’s too proud to say so.
