“Hey. How’s it going?” she asks, her voice higher than normal.

“Just peachy,” I say, giving her a forced smile.

“Any word yet?”

“No, but you will be the first person to know. If he ever speaks to me again.”

“I’m certain he’s going to contact you. He is taking a little longer than I thought he would though,” she says. “You didn’t block his number, did you?”

“I thought about it… But, no, I didn’t.”

“Just give him some more time. He’s still processing.”

“I don’t have high hopes for this. I’ve pretty much already resigned myself to being a single mom. And, honestly, I’m alright with it. At least right now I am. While this baby is still tucked safe inside and can’t wake me up in the middle of the night,” I say, placing my hand on my flat-for-now stomach.

Lauren has a seat in the chair in front of my desk.

“Well, I have something exciting to tell you,” she begins.

“Bring it…”

“You’ve matched fifty clients since you’ve been here. And, like I promised when I hired you, I’m going to start paying you a commission now for your matches. On top of your base.”

“Oh wow!! I thought I was close but I didn’t realize I’d already hit the magic number,” I exclaimed.

“Yep. You are kicking ass and I’m so excited for you.”

“Awesome timing since my expenses are about to go up significantly.”

“Absolutely. And thank God we have good insurance through the company,” she says, picking at a thread on her blouse. “At some point, we should talk about maternity leave for you. What that’s going to look like.”

The thought blows me away. Me, at home, taking care of a baby. Holy shit…

I agree and Lauren goes back to her office, mumbling something about needing to follow up with a needy client.

I look out the window, suddenly not in the mood to find Mimi a funny guy.

A few weeks ago, I was wondering when I’d meet someone who wants the things I do. Someone who is honest and doesn’t cheat. And now, I’m wondering whether this baby is a boy or a girl. What he or she will look like. And what name I will land on. I started looking at baby names last night and two hours later I came up for air and had jotted down more than 50 names.

There's just so much to think about.

Deep breaths, Sasha. One step at a time.

Just at that moment, my sister texts me.

Lindy: Hey girl. What’s up?

If you only knew, Lindy… But, I’m not ready to tell her quite yet. I want to be more settled with the idea first.

Me: Just working. You?

Lindy: Feeling like shit. The nausea is no joke this time. And Annabelle is driving me up a wall.

Me: Oh no!

Lindy: Need to reschedule for tomorrow night. Dan’s got this work thing we are required to go to.

Me: No worries. I want to see you soon though! Been too long.
