“What check?” Isla says, looking around, and Addison widens her eyes at me, giving me a dirty look.
“Isla, baby, grab your swimsuit in my bag and go change into it. You can swim with Auntie Bria and Iris.” Addison smiles. “Go on.”
“Yes!” Isla squeals before looking at Cam as he walks back outside, narrowing her eyes. “It’s my turn after I swim. You can’t hog him the entire time.”
“But I’m the baby whisperer.” He grins, and once she walks away, he looks at his wife. “I’m putting a baby in you tonight. It’s been decided.”
Addison shakes her head, completely ignoring him as she looks back at Sutton. “It’ll be okay, I promise. Also, want to know a secret? I bet that most all new mothers have felt the same way that you are feeling.”
“Preach!” Bria calls from the pool. “I cried for, like, three weeks straight. It was great.”
Addison nods. “See, told you. Your hormones are just wacky right now, and it’s all normal. Be patient with yourself.” She pats her back. “And your body is still bangin’, babe. Your husband is right; you look really good.”
“Damn right you do,” I chime in. “You’re hotter than ever.”
When she walks away from Sutton and goes to steal Easton from Cam, I walk over to Sutton and pull her onto my lap in a lawn chair.
“You’re doing great, Mama. I know you’re tired, and I know you feel like your body isn’t the same, but I promise, you look more beautiful than ever.” I kiss her cheek. “And I love this life we’ve built together. You and me.”
Craning her neck, she looks up at me, crying. “Why’d you have to go make me cry?” She sniffles. “I love you too. Even if I look like shit these days and you have your baby-ass smooth skin.”
She snuggles into my chest, and I wrap my arms around her, looking around at our friends and family who showed up just to check in on us. Cam came all the way from fucking Boston just to meet Easton. And Link and his family are arriving tomorrow.
I’m a lucky man. And it all started with one dance.
