Grace waves at us and drives out of the parking lot and turns in the opposite direction.

As I steer my truck towards home, I look over at a pensive Kate. “What are you two doing tomorrow?” I ask to break the silence.

“Huh? Oh, well, you know Grace is my accountant, right?”

“Yes.”

“Well, she’s coming over to have me sign a bunch of papers for the bank. I did not know there was so much paperwork and oversight to setting up a donations account. And with the amount of money we’ve collected, I want to make sure I do it right and completely aboveboard.”

We turn down my dark street and into my driveway. “That’s actually a great idea. Smart.”

“Yeah. Grace can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but she’s a smart cookie. Plus, I don’t want anyone to think I’m taking advantage of the situation. You know?”

“No one’s going to think that, Kate.” I follow her into the house and directly into my bedroom. With Pepper at my mother’s house tonight, we’re alone.

“I know, but still… I just want to be clear about everything.” Kate pulls up her sundress to take off and my body takes notice. The hem is only above her knees right now, but it’s getting higher with every second.

“Kate, you need to go into that bathroom and close the door.” I growl.

She looks around, “Why?” Her eyes are darting around the room, looking for a reason.

I pull my shirt off by reaching over my head and pulling it from the back and I watch her swallow hard. “That’s why and I have an early shift tomorrow.”

She smiles, “Oh.” And suddenly there’s an evil look in her eyes and I watch her back up to the bathroom door. She gets to the bathroom door and quickly grabs her dress and pulls it up and over her head and throws it at me.

I want her, and I want her now. Taking a large step towards her, I almost make it to the doorway when she suddenly closes it in my face, and I hear the lock click. “Kate, that’s not fair.” I growl out.

“You have an early shift tomorrow, remember?” She laughs through the door.

“I’ll get you for this, woman. Just remember that.”

“I love you.” She singsongs through the door.

I shake my head as I hear the shower turn on. “I love you, too, baby.”

Knowing she’s in there naked, I walk away and decide to get my stuff ready for tomorrow’s shift.

By the time I’ve got all of my stuff ready for tomorrow and taken my shower, Kate’s sound asleep in my bed.

The moonlight is filtering in and shining down on her face, and I’m overcome with emotion for her; for us. I sit in the chair in the corner of my room and just watch her sleep. She’s so quiet; so peaceful. I hope I have something to do with that peace.

She’s changed my life. She’s changed my world in only a matter of weeks. I did not know someone could feel this way about another person. And yet, here I am wanting to make her mine permanently.

Kate stirs, and I watch her reach over to my side of the bed to find it empty. She sits up, looks around the room, and sees me sitting in the chair. “What are you doing? Are you okay?”

I stand up and climb into bed. “Yeah, I’m good. Come here.” I pull her onto me, and she rests her head over my heart and her arm across my waist.

This is home.

This is nirvana.

By the time I get all of my stuff packed into my truck, Kate is rushing me out the door. “You’re going to be late, lieutenant, and that’s not a good look for your crew.”

“I’m going. I’m going, but promise me you’ll stay here tonight.”

“What? No. This is your house. I have my own. Besides, I’ll be there all day with Grace. I’m not going to hang out with her at my place and then drive all the way back over here. That’s silly.”

“So, have Grace come here and you two can hang out by the pool and do whatever it is that girls do together.”
