She’s on the bed, tied up as two people with ski masks are on top of her, stripping her, blindfolding her as she barely fights back.

“FUCK!” I scream, slamming my forehead with a fist, going 130 miles per hour to get back to her while still watching her on my phone.

The muscles and veins strain against my skin, filling with rage. Too much of it, I can’t contain the quaking of my body.

And when she screams, when they take a small carving to her stomach, I know instantly. The Midnight Murderer has Kayla. Two of them as a team. Now it makes sense how they’ve managed to get away with it for so long.

They have her. They will kill her.

I should’ve been there instead of avenging a past I should’ve let die a long time ago. Because of my carelessness, they came for her. Now I’m gonna lose the only person I have left in this world.

If I’m too late…if they kill her…my life is over too.

“I’m sorry, baby bird!” My voice bleeds with an indescribable level of agony. “It’s all my fault. Fuuuck!”

My chest rattles, and something registers in my eye. I fling at it so I can still watch Kayla. As I do, I glance down at the back of my finger, seeing something I haven’t seen since I was a child.

My own tears.

It hurts. It fucking hurts so goddamn bad to see her cry, to watch them do this to her.

“I’m coming! I swear I’m gonna kill them for this!”

But I fucking hope like hell I can make it back in time to do just that.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

KAYLA

“Shh.I’ve got you, baby bird,” A’s soothing voice lulls me, yet I’m still unsure where I am or who I’m with.

It sounds like him. My A. But I don’t know what is real and what isn’t.

I can barely move my body, darkness still creeping in until hands against my face pull down whatever’s been covering my eyes.

“A?” I blink back, still hazy, hoping this isn’t some dream.

Did he really come for me? I try to pry my eyelids ajar, but they feel as heavy as lead. A whimper escapes me, and it’s like I hear myself, yet it sounds like someone else. Someone distant.

“It’s me… Fuck,” he groans with anguish bleeding through. “I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I failed you.”

It feels like I’m being lifted, carried, or held. I can’t be sure.I sag against him, feeling somehow lighter now that I know he’s come.

“I’m gonna take care of you. I won’t leave your side.”

I whimper, hands tingling as I grab on to something. Maybe his shirt or his hair. His arms tighten around me, like a heavy blanket keeping me warm.

“You can sleep now,” he says softly.

With a sigh, I melt further into him. Pressing my face into this man I barely know, I fall back into darkness, knowing he’ll find me and bring me back to the light.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

KAYLA

Light filtersthrough the narrowing of my eyes, and I stretch my limbs, my body achy and sore for some reason I can’t quite recall.

My breathing intensifies as I glance around the room, and panic grips its ugly hand around my throat. Where the hell am I?
