Page 56 of Expecting in Oceans

“T’Wanu dragons do beautiful woodwork,” I said. “I would never have expected anyone outside of the forest to have such command over trees.”

Ari looked up. “Every T’Wanu clan has at least one master carpenter. Those beams were probably carved by Makoa’s father, or maybe his grandfather.”

Kneeling beside me, he gently pushed his palms around the sides of my bump, spreading the oil in a smooth, unbroken motion.

“Oh,” I said. “Oh, that does feel nice.”

“Trained healer,” he said, working his fingers in slow circles.

It was no surprise to me at all how precise and practiced his touch was. Those fingers had made me come dozens of times. Somehow, for once I kept my mind from going into obscene places and enjoyed his massage without losing control. And it felt nice to be able to do that.

“She moved again,” Ari said.

“You said she again! So you believe that it’s a girl!”

“Well, I…”

“You can’t change your mind now,” I said.

“There she is again,” he said, leaning so close to my belly I could feel his breath on my skin. “She might be able to hear us.”

“Hello, baby,” I cooed. “It’s your parents. Can you hear us?”

We both gasped when a slight bump rippled over my stomach. My head spun a little, and I grabbed Ari’s arm.

“Are you alright?” he asked.

“Sometimes I forget she’s in there swimming around and not inside of an egg.”

Ari slid his palms across my stomach and pressed his lips to the swell, just above my navel. It was moments like this that made me weakest for him.

“Alright,” I said, grabbing his wrists. “It’s your turn.”

“My turn for what?”

“A belly rub! Come on, turn around. Open up your robe.”

“I’m not the pregnant one here,” he said.

“Your shoulders, then. You’re far too tense, Ari. Come on.”

I slipped the robe off his shoulders and kneeled behind him. I realized that I’d never really gotten a good look at his naked back. We were always facing each other when he had his clothes off, or I was facing away…

I scooped up the bottle of oil and dabbed it onto his skin. His muscles were pulled as tight as ropes.

“By the Gods, Ari,” I said. “When’s the last time you relaxed?”

“What makes you think I have time to relax?” he joked.

“What about when you showed me your secret hideaway?” I asked as I pushed my thumbs along his shoulders.

“That was the closest I’ve come to relaxing in a while.”

“Not even then, huh?”

He groaned and lolled his head forward as I rubbed the base of his neck, where the thick sinews felt as firm as roots.

“There’s always something to think about,” Ari said. “The next big problem that I have to take care of. I’ve just come to live with it. Ah! Oof… That spot.”
