I touched my belly. “You must’ve spent a lot of time here after you found out about this.”

“Many, many nights.”

“Thank you for taking me here. You know… I’m beginning to think you might not hate me after all.”

“I’m pleased you finally figured it out,” he replied.

I climbed up into the nest. The roots were spongy and soft and very comfortable. I stretched out and felt my body sink into an impression in them. The tree was hugging me, and I felt right at home.

“This is wonderful,” I said.

Ari followed and lay down next to me, and I snuggled up to him.

“Don’t mind me,” I said.

“I’m not complaining.”

It felt good, being here with him. I liked how he touched me. I liked the way I felt being in his arms. But I wasn’t so naïve to believe that meant things would work between us. That would require more time.

Ari

ONE MONTH LATER

“You know what I heard?” Pan said with his signature troublemaker’s grin.

“I probably don’t want to know. Turn around, top of your robe off, please.” I opened my instrument box and used the scope to listen to my cousin’s lungs, then felt along his spine for any abnormalities.

“I heard you and Istil boned in the hall of ancestors.”

I jabbed him in the ribs.

“Ow!”

“Stay still,” I instructed.

“Is it true?” he asked. “Is that where you knocked him up?”

“Who told you this anyway?”

“Wow, so it is true. You know, that’s actually kind of hot.”

“Ireallydon’t want to hear that coming from you,” I said. “I remember when you were just a little kid.”

“Yeah, well, I ain’t so little anymore, brah.”

I knocked Pan on the top of his head with the pad of my fist. “You’ll always be a child to me, cousin.”

“Whatever. So, is it a girl or a boy? You should name it after me. Pan makes a great girl or boy’s name.”

“I have no idea,” I said. “We haven’t checked. Alright. Everything looks good. I only recommend you eat more. You’re looking a little skinny.”

He shrugged and put his robe top back on. “I’m fine with it. Alphas like it when an omega seems fragile.”

I sighed as I added notes to his health record and filed it away.

There was a knock on the door.
