Kai turned to Makoa. “Makoa? Did you?”

“I just found out before you came. But I had a hunch something was going on.”

“This is too crazy. I need a fucking drink.” Kai poured the mixture into his cup and knocked it back. “This is disgusting!”

Makoa took a sip and made a sour face. “That’s definitely not firewater. I think we’ve got a jug of luyu in the store room. Let’s all have one proper drink together. A toast to the baby.”

“I need full details,” Kai said, then waved his hand. “On second thought, no I don’t. But what the hell? Why didn’t you guys say anything? How long has it been?”

“Since your ceremony,” I said. “And we didn’t say anything because we didn’t want to bring the entire clan into this. Eli only just confirmed the pregnancy for us.”

“I just didn’t know you two were together.”

“Because we aren’t,” Istil said.

Kai sat back in his chair and ran his fingers through his hair. “This feels like a situation I’d get into, not you, Ari. Does Grandma know?”

“Only all of you, Eli, and Theo are aware of the situation,” I said.

“Wow. She’s gonna lose it when she finds out. And she’s going to find out.”

“Obviously,” I said. “With the time that’s passed, it won’t be possible to hide it for much longer. But…I’m not ready for the clan to find out just yet. I’ll take all the time I can get.”

“They’re not going to be happy that you guys aren’t mated,” Leo said.

“No, they won’t. It goes against every tradition we have.”

“Not to mention, you’re Mr. Perfect,” Kai said. “Grandma’s shining example of what every Blue Fin alpha needs to be.”

“I’m very aware,” I grumbled unhappily.

“But there’s one other question,” Leo said. “It’s a big one. If you two aren’t mated… where is the baby going to go? Istil, you said you’re going to go back to Silver Mountain.”

“They’ll be a T’Wanu dragon,” I said.

“Hold on,” Istil said. “You don’t get to make that choice.”

“I do have a say in it,” I said.

“Sure, you can say whatever you want. Doesn’t mean that’s what I’m going to choose.”

“They were conceived here, they’ll be born here, they should be a T’Wanu dragon.”

Istil stood up. “Well, maybe I’ll just go back to Silver Mountain now!”

Kai raised his hands. “Guys! Come on, take it easy. You have time to figure this stuff out, so let’s not make any rash decisions, yeah?”

“That’s right,” Makoa said. “We’re here to help. For now, the important thing is making sure that Istil gets everything he needs. How about this? Why don’t we all move to the main house for now? It’s closer to town, so it’s a little easier for us and our Guardian shit. And maybe we can take some of the attention off Istil if we’re there.”

It was a good plan, and it clearly made Istil happy. I was certainly fine with it—I’d been trying to get the brothers to move back to the family house for a long time. But would Kai go along with it?

“For any other reason, I’d say hell no,” he said. “But for Istil and his baby… Fuck it. It’d only be temporary, anyway. Visir? What do you think?”

“Anything for my cousin,” Visir said, nodding his head. “And anything for you.”

“I’ll stay behind,” said Leo. “Someone needs to operate the lighthouse.”

“Alright!” Makoa clapped his hands. “It’s decided, then. The boys are goin’ home! Ooh, hold on.” He ran to the kitchen and returned with a ceramic jug of real T’Wanu luyu. “A toast! To a healthy pregnancy.”
