Cara glared daggers at her, but Quinn ignored her with an innocent smile.

“Sure,” Nick said. “You guys go ahead. We’ll be right behind you.”

“It’s fine,” she told him. “Honestly.”

“I don’t mind,” he said.

She hesitated. “Thanks.”

They left the group behind and walked towards her house. She heard Quinn giggling before they even reached the corner, and she was glad the dim evening light hid her blushing.

“I didn’t expect to walk around much tonight,” she told him. “My friends and I live just around the corner, so it felt silly to bring a huge coat. It’s only a couple of minutes away.”

“It’s okay.”

They walked in easy silence. She wasn’t good at silence, but he had a comfortable energy, walking with his hands in the pockets of his jeans.

He felt her eyes on him, and he smiled. “You alright?”

She looked away. “Sorry. I wasn’t staring, I swear.”

He just laughed. He was nice and handsome and disarmingly friendly, and she was confident in her ability to say the wrong thing. So she kept her mouth shut until they got to the house.

“It’s just up ahead,” she said, and he followed her up the path and inside the house.

“I’m surprised it took us this long to meet,” he said, closing the door behind them. “My friends have mentioned you a few hundred times by now. Quinn and Julia are always talking about you. It feels like I’m the only person in the city who doesn’t know you.”

“Yeah, I’ve been pretty busy recently,” she said.

“College?”

“Family stuff.”

“Well, I’m glad we finally met.”

She returned his smile, and she suddenly realised how close they were standing. “I should probably look for my coat,” she said.

Neither of them moved.

“Probably,” he said.

He was taller than her, and she had to look up to meet his eyes. Not for the first time, she noticed that the top button of his shirt was open.

His mouth twitched into a smile, and she blushed again.

“Our friends will be looking for us,” she said.

He nodded, but his eyes dropped to her lips, and she leaned towards him, slowly but inevitably, like she was caught in his gravity.

He reached for her, and her head cleared and she stepped back.

“I’ll get my coat,” she announced, completely destroying the moment. She didn’t know why she stopped it or why she felt like she was being pulled towards him, but her heart was beating fast, and she felt her control slipping.

“We have time,” Nick said softly. His hand brushed her face and his other hand touched her waist, and she lost her breath. Everything else disappeared, and she could only see him. Her heart was racing in her chest, and her body moved on its own. Her hand went to his chest, and she lifted her face as he moved to kiss her.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket.

Nick blinked and glanced down at the noise, breaking eye contact and pulling her out of the moment.
