Eric was examining the map, but he looked up with a frown. “Why do you sound relieved?”
“If your reaction is normal, then he’ll be in danger if anyone ever finds out. You guys freaked out. The first thing you did was grab a shovel as a weapon. If other people have similar reactions, he could be in danger. I know you think I’m wrong about him, but can you trust me enough to keep it a secret for now?”
He examined her face. “Why do you care so much about him? You barely know him.”
“I... We have a lot of mutual friends. I’ve heard a lot about him from other people, and everyone says he’s a good guy. I care about my friends, and they care about him.”
“That’s it?”
No. “Yes.” She sighed. “Just don’t tell anyone, okay?”
Her father went back to the map and leaned on the table, spreading his hands against the wood. “It’s too late for that.”
“What?”
“I already reached out. We need to know who else knows. It’s only been a few hours, but we’ll have answers soon.”
Her stomach clenched. “Nobody knows! I told you. He found outlast night.”
“I doubt that.”
“Why don’t you trust me?”
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with. It’s a void.”
“He.”
“What?”
“He’s a void.”
Her father rubbed his face again. “Fine. He’s a void. You don’t know what he’s capable of.”
“Neither does he,” she said.
“Let’s hope it stays that way,” he said.
Her jaw clenched. “Let’s hope none of your friends try to kill him.”
“Any witch with common sense will avoid him, but if we’re lucky, someone else might take care of the problem for us.”
She stared in disbelief. “Are you serious? Take care of the problem?”
“Cara-”
She slammed the glass of water onto the counter and stormed out of the room.
“Where are you going?” Eric called out.
“The bathroom!” she yelled.
It was a lie, but she didn’t need him to know that she was getting her phone. She needed to warn Nick before it was too late. It had only been a few hours since she told her parents.
She could only hope that nothing terrible had happened yet.
