She touched his arm, channelling power through her fingertips. The void flared and absorbed her magic as soon as it reached his skin. She felt that familiar pull, the sharp tug of ice on her soul, but it stopped as soon as it started.

She looked up at him. “Are you still in control?”

“Of course, I’m in control.”

“You don’t look like you are. I’ve never seen the void like this, Nick. It’s everywhere. Even your eyes are black.”

He turned away from her and picked up the kanabo, wiping ash off it.

“Nick, you need to talk to me.”

“I need to kill Samuel and everyone loyal to him.”

“That’s a big task.”

“I have a big knife.”

“It’s a dagger, not a-”

He shot a look over his shoulder, and she stopped talking.

But it was Nick, and even if he wasn’t himself, she couldn’t be afraid of him.

“Why did you come back here?” she asked. “You want to go on a rampage and get revenge, so why did you come home?”

He put down the kanabo and leaned against the table. “You think I came home for some emotional reason. You’re trying to see how far I’ve gone. How much is me and how much is the void.”

Cara waited.

“I hate to disappoint, Cara, but you’re barking up the wrong tree.”

“Am I?”

“I came back here to check on Henry, lock the doors, and find a way to reactivate those protective wards outside. I can’t leave him here without protection.”

“Sounds like a choice based on emotion, if you ask me,” she said.

“It’s not. I can’t let anything happen to him or Brett would be upset. Besides, I had to get the taste of vampire ash out of my mouth.”

“The taste of... Was that why you were rinsing your mouth? How did you-”

“Look, as much as I’d love to stay here and waste time with you, I should go. The vampires aren’t going to drop dead by themselves.”

He walked past her again, heading for the door.

“Don’t you want to talk to Henry about this? If I can’t change your mind, maybe he can.”

Nick stopped. He wasn’t facing her, and she couldn’t see his face, but his body stiffened. Just for a moment, and then his muscles relaxed. She saw the black lines on his arms thicken and darken, but she didn’t know why.

“I’m leaving.”

“Nick, stop. Listen to me. This isn’t you, it’s the void. You’re making rash decisions and you’re going to get yourself killed. Henry-”

Nick turned sharply, and she almost flinched at the rage on his face. She stepped back, and he stepped closer, tilting his head as he looked her in the eye.

He was taller than her, broader and stronger than she was, and she had never felt it more than right now. There was something terrifying in his eyes - a complete absence of humanity. But this was Nick. She couldn’t be afraid of him. He wouldn’t hurt her.

“You can’t leave,” she said, and she slowly walked around him until she was standing between him and the doorway.
