“This void is the trigger for everything,” he said. “Samuel couldn’t resist the chance to have a pet void in his army, and the elders can’t ignore his presence in the city, either.”

“It’s not his fault. He didn’t choose to become a void. If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s mine, since I was the one who activated it.”

Eric reached across the table to squeeze her arm. “It’s not your fault, Cara.”

“It’s as much my fault as his.”

Her father sighed. “We’ll have to agree to disagree.”

She nodded, but she couldn’t get rid of that painful feeling in the pit of her stomach. She’d never fought with her parents before. Not like this. They always came to some agreement, some understanding, but this was different. She couldn’t see a way past it.

They chatted for a while longer, and then he left, heading home to meet the rest of the coven.

“Your mother will be happy to hear you’re well.”

“Tell her I miss her.”

“I will.”

She walked him to the door, and as soon as it closed, she heard the door in the kitchen opening again.

“Sorry that took so long,” she said, walking back inside.

Nick shrugged. “It’s fine. It’s a warm day, anyway, although I think one of your neighbours saw me.”

Cara smiled at the thought of someone seeing Nick standing shirtless outside her house for ages. “Did they look like they were enjoying it?”

He laughed.

Chapter 42 - Nick

Nick was practising with a dagger in the backyard. He strapped a wooden board to a tree, and he’d drawn a face on the wood with big, cartoon-style fangs. Henry laughed when he saw it, but he also gave Nick some pointers on stance, grip and form.

It was slow, but Nick was improving. Henry kept telling him he was a natural, but Nick knew he wasn’t improving fast enough. He didn’t have time to train. He needed to be able to defend himself right now.

He heard voices inside and decided to take a break.

“Hey, Brett,” Nick said, walking into the kitchen. “Did you just get back?”

“Yeah,” Brett grunted.

“I thought you fed recently.”

“He wasn’t hunting,” Henry said.

Nick looked at Brett. “What’s going on?” He saw the look on his brother’s face, and his stomach dropped. “Are you okay?”

“I am, but... There’s something else.”

“You’re hesitating,” Nick said. “Why are you hesitating?”

Brett didn’t meet his gaze. “I was at the den.”

“The den?” Henry said. “With the vampires? Are you serious? God, Brett, I knew something was up, but why in the world would you go back there?”

Brett shrugged. “I had stuff to do, so I went back to the den.”
