“And there were a few mentions of voids not always being immune to magic.”

“Really?”

“Yeah,” she said. “It wasn’t clear.”

“So, some voids weren’t immune?”

“Maybe. Or they weren’t always immune. Maybe it only happened sometimes.”

“Can I read these books?”

“Yeah, of course. I’ll get copies. Honestly, though, there wasn’t much more to be found. A lot of those records were really old. Barely legible, and huge chunks of text were damaged or ripped out.”

“Someone tried to hide that information?”

“I doubt it,” she said. “It was probably just normal damage from decades of use and travel and being passed from generation to generation.”

“Okay,” Nick said. “So we don’t have any concrete information, everything contradicts itself, and a lot of the information has been lost. Is there anything wedoknow?”

“Well, I have a working theory about how the void works,” she said.

“Really?”

“Yeah. I read a lot of stuff in that library, and I’ve seen you using it, so...”

“Go ahead. Tell me whatever you know.”

“Nobody has ever done a proper study of the mechanics of the void,” she said. “But based on the stories, it seems like there are a few common explanations.” She frowned. “Although, anecdotes are rarely reliable enough to-”

“Cara, I’m sorry, but I can already tell you’re going to dive into a complicated explanation, and I’m about to lose you. Do you know how it works?”

“Yes. Maybe.”

“Okay.”

“When it first happened, you drained my magic without trying. It was a passive process, or some kind of animal instinct, although I’m leaning towards the passive theory.”

He stared at her, and she quickly continued.

“I think there’s an energy gradient,” she said. “Magic, supernatural energy, it’s all around us, but most people can’t access it. Witches are connected to nature, and she lends her strength to us, giving us an internal source of energy.”

“I’m following you so far,” he said.

“If we use too much energy, too much magic, we can exhaust ourselves. A higher demand takes a toll on our physical body because our internal source is depleted, so the magic has to draw power from somewhere.”

“You’d pass out,” he said.

“Or worse,” she said. “Some spells can’t be stopped once they begin. If the demand is too high, the witch casting it could die.”

“Really?”

“Yes. It’s very rare, since most spells have safeguards built in to prevent it, but not always. It depends on the spell. Spellcraft is one of the most difficult and valued disciplines for a reason.”

“You’ve done some of that, right?”

“A little,” she said. “Most witches stick to their natural talents.”

“So your source comes from inside,” Nick said. “And when we touched, I drained that source.”
