“It wasn’t all bad,” Nick said, trying a weak smile.

Brett grinned. “I bet.”

Henry looked at Brett. “You’ve met her?”

“Oh, yeah, she’s great. Way out of Nick’s league.”

“Hey.”

Brett just kept grinning, and Nick shoved him.

“Careful,” Brett said. “I’m a scary vampire void now. I’ll bite you.”

“Try it and see what happens.”

Brett laughed. “Wait, Dad, I have a question. You said that the void and witch bloodlines got mixed together. How did that happen? Some forbidden romance between a pretty witch and a handsome void?”

Brett gave Nick a grin, and Nick tried to ignore him.

“Something like that,” Henry said.

“So they fell in love and had kids,” Brett said, openly grinning as Nick glared daggers at him. “Maybe they met in college.”

“The voids have always been feared, but information hasn’t always been easily accessible. With modern technology, everyone can find out almost anything. So everyone knows about the voids. Everyone in the supernatural world, I mean,” Henry added. “But if we go back far enough, there were a lot of witches who didn’t know about them.”

“So they didn’t know what they were getting involved in,” Nick said.

“Or they knew, and they didn’t care,” Henry said. “The only reason I mention the lack of accessible information is because it might have removed any preconceived bias from the witches involved.”

Brett looked at Nick. “A lot of big words, there.”

Nick smiled.

“It’s probably another reason Cara’s parents don’t want you two growing closer,” Henry said.

Nick stared at him. “Are you serious?”

“Yes.”

“I’m not planning on having kids any time soon.”

“I know that, but they don’t, and accidents happen.”

“Okay, I’m going to change the subject before this conversation gets any more awkward.”

“Actually, I can do that for you,” Brett said. “I think I owe you guys an explanation.”

Henry and Nick shared a look.

“It’s okay,” Nick said. “You don’t have to tell us if you don’t want to.”

“Stop being nice to me,” Brett said. “I’m not fragile.”

“Sorry.”

Brett hesitated, but Nick and Henry stayed quiet.

“I’m sorry I disappeared. I had some... stuff to work through.”
