“I wouldn’t dream of it,” I ground out. “Now, can we discuss the bigger issues at hand?"

Chapter 29 – Viktor

“This damn sweater itches,” I growled, shifting my shoulders yet again.

Sophia pursed her lips. “It’s wool, genius. It’s not supposed to be comfortable.”

Briana snorted, resting her chin on my sister’s shoulder.

“It’s so nice of you to wear your fiancée’s gift,” Sophia said drily.

“It’s not nice, it’s strategy,” I muttered.

The gate lifted, and the trio of blacked-out SUVs came into my drive. Unease wavered through my chest at all these East Coast Bratva crawling around my property. But my uncle had a retinue of soldiers here as well, so we would still outnumber the newcomers. Just because we were an alliance didn’t mean we could let our guard down even for a second.

I slid my gaze to Briana. Her world was shaken up with these eye-opening events. She was handling it well for an outsider.I have to get her out of here. But what if she wants to stay?My chest pinched painfully at the thought, and I looked away. It was nothing but a crazy pipe dream. She did come here for me, but that made me feel like an even bigger piece of shit.

Instead, my future was stepping out of the SUV. Her platinum blonde hair was cut in a chic bob, which the socialite was probably hoping made her look older than she was. There wasn’t a single thing out of place in her appearance. Anya appeared frigid—it would be like fucking a corpse.

Of course, the comparison sprang to my mind. I couldn’t help but remember how hot Briana’s blood ran, and how feisty she could be when she wasn’t worried about being the perfect daughter. She’d hardly been closed off in that department. That fucking gorgeous body of hers was free. I blinked rapidly but was unable to banish the images of her naked.

“Mr. Volkov, good evening!” I called out, stepping forward to shake the head of the New York Bratva’s hand. Even with pudgy fingers, there was nothing soft about his grip.

“Thank you for hosting us, my boy,” he lisped. The eyes surrounded by heavy bags didn’t miss a thing. Volkov slid a glance to the side where the women stood. His look was appraising, but it lacked any licentiousness—which meant I didn’t have to punch him.

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Volkov. Would you like a drink?” Briana piped up. She elbowed Sophia, who flashed the boss a tight smile.

Bri was a natural, jumping into the hostess’s role with aplomb.

Remembering my own manners, I turned to my fiancée after knowing Mr. Volkov was well looked after. “Miss Volkov.” I grasped the princess’s thin fingers, noting how cold they were. She angled her wrist, and I realized after an awkward second that she wanted me to kiss those dainty knuckles. I did, and she giggled.

“I’m so happy to spend more time alone with you, Viktor. There were just too many eyes last night for us to really get acquainted.” As Anya spoke, she pointedly assessed my sister and Briana as they led her father into the house. “Maybe you could walk me around the property before we go inside?”

“Your father—”

“Expects his future son-in-law to be a gentleman, but he doesn’t care enough about me to forbid me to see my future house.” There was a bite to her voice.
