Warm arms wrap around my waist, and I’m dragged upward. I break the surface, spluttering, coughing up water.

“It’s okay. You’re okay.” Cash’s voice, warm and deep. His strong arms encircle me, protecting me from the water. He turns me around and his blue eyes banish the sky and the fear. “Can you breathe?”

I nod, and try to say something, but it only makes me cough more. My lungs and throat are burning.

And Cash is here. Cash saved me.

Thirty-Four

CASH

I holdJune close to my chest, swiping her soaked hair back from her face and checking her. When I saw her fall from Diver’s Point, I didn’t hesitate. June’s not great with water, and the way she screamed sent adrenaline through me.

“It’s okay,” I say, “you’re good. Are you good?”

Finally, her coughing stops, and she meets my gaze with those beautiful green eyes. “Yeah,” she says at last. “I—where did you come from?”

I’m treading water, holding her upright. The only thing I did before diving in was kick off my shoes.

“Jesse wanted to come out here for a swim. I didn’t realize you were hiking here.”

“Well, I wasn’t hiking here exactly.” She points at the water, giving me a small smile.

I laugh. “Glad to see the fall didn’t knock your sense of humor.”

“I don’t think it knocked anything,” she replies. “I just got a shock.”

“Still going to make you go to the hospital.”

“Seriously, I’m fine.” She glances up at Diver’s Point. The girls are up there, as well as a few other townsfolk and tourists, all staring down at us. June acts as if she wants to swim back to shore, but she makes it about two strokes before she starts sinking again.

I grab hold of her and bring her to the surface.

June coughs and blinks. “Guess swimming isn’t my strong suit.”

“Good thing you didn’t come to the quarry to swim, right?”

I want to kiss her right here, right now, and I’m considering it seriously. I tuck her against my chest, my hands moving under the water to her ass. I squeeze gently, and June gasps. “Cash.”

“No one can see.”

I trail my fingers under the crease between her thighs and ass cheeks, so tempted by her, I can barely think straight.

A shrill whistle interrupts my progress toward her pussy.

I glance toward the shore and spot my brother standing there. He waves, holding up my phone.

What now?

June pulls a face. “I don’t know if I can swim.”

“On my back. Arms around my neck.”

“I—what?”

I turn around and fix her arms on me. “Hold tight,” I murmur.

June’s breasts are pressed against my back. I want her as mine. I want everyone to know that June belongs with me, but I’m not sure I can take the pain of losing her when it happens. Because it’s always going to happen. Love is pain. I swim back to the shore, and she lets go when her feet touch the silt underneath us.
