“Well, you’d better try,” I say, and wink. I turn around, wiggle my ass at him for good measure.

“Watch it!” he shouts. “You’ll take someone’s eye out with that thing.”

I guffaw in what has to be the least sexiest way ever, and Cash laughs from the kitchen.

I’m meeting Marci at the quarry for our hike. “Bye, Alex,” I call up the stairs. “Have fun today!”

Before I can leave, Alex comes darting down the stairs. “Bye, June,” she says. “I miss you already.”

“I can’t wait to hear all about it when you get back,” I say. “I’m so excited.”

She smiles. “Me too.”

“Are you okay? You look a little pale.”

“I’m fine,” she says. “I’m just excited. And I’ve got a headache.”

“Headache?” Cash appears, the picture of a concerned dad, which only serves to make him even sexier. Damn man.

Alex goes over to her father, and I leave them alone, waving a quick goodbye as I leave.

The drive to the quarry is filled with a mishmash of thoughts. I’m yo-yoing between wanting Cash and wanting to run away before I wind up with a broken heart again.

Cash gives me mixed messages. First tells me he doesn’t want a relationship, then I’m his.

Marci meets me at the base of the hill that winds up to Diver’s Point, wearing a sensible pair of hiking boots, shorts, and a bikini top, her red hair tied up in a high ponytail. “You,” She narrows her eyes. “Have had sex.”

“Marce!”

“It’s like a sixth sense I have,” she says, circling a finger toward her face. “I can always tell when someone’s been getting the good-good. And you, ma’am, have been receiving the best of the best.”

“Would you keep your voice down?” I grab her arm, guiding her up the path a few steps. “Someone might hear.”

“Relax,” Marci says with a mischievous grin. “Belle and Hannah aren’t here yet. Besides, the trail’s pretty quiet today. So?”

“So?”

“Tell me all about it.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” I say, lifting my nose in the air.

“Oh, don’t you give me that, June Jackson. You’re all colors of satisfied, and I deserve to know the juicy details,” Marci says. “Believe it or not, I’m invested in your relationship with Cash. You have no idea how frustrating it’s been to watch you two from afar, both of you as blind as the other when it comes to love.”

“Gee, thanks. And it’s not love.”

“Don’t change the subject.”

“I didn’t.”

“Well?”

I check the coast is clear and then lean in. “We might have done some things.”

Marci lets out an excited squeal and claps her hands. “Yes! I knew it. I so knew it. You two are meant to be. I told you so. Didn’t I tell you so?”

“Hmm.”

“I can’t believe it,” Marci says. “Actually, I can. You know, they say a stopped clock is right twice a day? Well, this clock is ticking baby, and I am right all the damn time.”
