I’m pretty damn fucking good at reading when a woman wants me, and in that moment, the way June looked at me…

“Fuck,” I repeat, and then I tear the screen door open and rush through the house, up the stairs, to her closed bedroom door, right next to mine.

I lean against the jamb, catch my breath, school my dick to behave.

Finally, I knock.

Movement inside.

A hesitation.

The door opens, and June stares out at me, beautiful, but her eyes are filled with tears.

“I’m sorry,” I say.

June opens those perfect lips, still red from our kiss. “What?”

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”

June looks ready to say something but doesn’t.

“I feel like an ass, not that it fucking matters how I feel, but I, uh, I shouldn’t have taken advantage of you in that moment.”

“Taken advantage of me.” June sounds pissed.

Shit.

“Yeah. You were upset about your ex and—”

“You’re telling me I was upset about my ex. You. You’re telling me that.” She laughs under her breath, shaking her head. “Cash. You know what? It’s fine.”

“Fine.”

“Yeah.”

She has every right to be mad. “June, if you don’t want to work for me anymore, I’ll understand,” I say gruffly.

“I—what? No. I don’t want to quit,” she says. “Alex is great, this job pays well, and I’ve got everything I need to set myself up for the future.” June gnaws on her bottom lip, peering up at me through long lashes.

Fuck. I want to kiss her all over again. I want to press her against the wall and make good on what we started. Strip that white summery dress from her frame, expose her naked flesh, suck her nipples into my mouth.

June squares her shoulders. “I’ve spent too long wanting my life to change and not actually changing it. I’m scared, Cash.”

“Of?” If she says me, my cock will deflate like a punctured raft.

“Failing,” she says. “I think. I don’t know. And I want this job badly, but it’s difficult.”

“Why?”

“Because it is. It’s difficult.” She glances off to one side. There’s something she’s holding back, but she isn’t upset about what happened.

Finally, June turns her gaze toward mine, and there’s fire in her eyes.

“We’re adults,” she says. “Not kids anymore. Adults have needs, and that’s totally normal. We had a moment of weakness.”

I did read what she wanted correctly. Sex and nothing more.

I stare at her, holding back a deluge of images, flashes of her naked body, my fingers wrapped in her hair, her mouth around my cock. I grunt because talking is inadvisable.
