“Didn’t mean it like that. I just meant that I’ll take care of you,” he says.

My heart turns over.

“Financially. If you choose to be Alex’s nanny.”

“What happened to her previous nanny?” I’m too curious for my own good, and the questions I’ve been holding back are on their way out now. “I mean, you’ve always been the organized one, Cash. I can’t imagine a world in which you don’t have all your ducks in a cute little row.”

“Mrs. Crouchbottom broke her hip.”

My hand comes up to my throat. His gaze fixates on it. “I’m so sorry. That’s terrible.”

“Doing a Zumba workout tape.”

“I’m not sure why that’s relevant,” I say, with a half smile, “but I hope she’s okay?”

“She’s going to be out for months.”

“I—”

“If you’re interested in helping me out, come by tomorrow.”

I suck in a breath. Every part of me wants to jump at the opportunity. I love kids. Alex is super sweet, and we got on well in the diner. I like Cash. A little too much.

I’m so attracted to him I can barely think straight.

“Where do you live?”

“Next door.”

My stomach inverts. “Next door. So, you would just want a nanny for the day, right? I could stay here, and—”

“No.”

“No?” I ask.

“I need a live-in nanny,” Cash says. “Dad is not doing great.”

I know Cash’s mom passed away a couple of years back. I sent Ganny and his father flowers and my condolences.

“I’m so sorry, Cash.”

“I might need to leave at night on short notice,” he says. “So, I need you there at all times.”

“What about Olivia?” The words are out before I can stop them because I’ve been desperate to ask. “Can’t she come by and look after Alex?”

Cash’s expression shutters. “She’s not in the picture.”

“But she’s Alex’s mom, right?”

Cash nods once.

Olivia and Cash dated for years, they’d lived the celebrity life together when Cash’s band made it big. I have no idea what transpired between them, but I can’t understand why a mother would leave her child.

Cash, unreadable, watches me. “Come by tomorrow morning if you want the job. I need the help if you’re willing to offer it. I’ll pay you well.”

“Thanks, Cash, I—”

He takes a step toward me, so close I can smell his spicy, leathery cologne. He smells the same, but better. More manly.
