“I can’t what?”

“You can’t just go down on me in the office.”

“I want you to think about me tonight.”

“That’s just ridiculous,” I say.

“Then tell that guy no. Tell him you’re meeting me for dinner instead.” He pauses. “And I’ll give you round two.”

“You’re only asking me to dinner because I have a date.”

“You don’t know that,” he says. “Maybe I’m asking you for another reason.”

“Well, I’m not canceling,” I say. “You have a good day.” I get off the desk and feel slightly awkward, but I’m not going to allow myself to feel embarrassed.

“Hi. You must be...” I pause as I try to remember his name. The guy stands there just staring at me, with a weird look on his face, and I’m not sure if he thinks that I am flirting with him or if he realizes that this is an awkward moment because I can’t remember his name.

“Zevo,” he says finally. “I’m Zevo. And you must be Emma.”

“Ella,” I say. “Nice to meet you, Zevo.”

“Hey, when I saw you wanted to meet up, I was like, ‘Hell yeah, that hottie with the thotty body.’”

I stare at him for a couple of seconds. What was that he had just said? “So, yeah, I thought it would be better to meet sooner rather than later.”

“I agree because we don’t want to waste noTon thee, can’t you see?”

I stare at him, blinking for a couple of seconds. What is going on? Why is he talking like that? “So, have you been here before?” I ask as we step into the restaurant.

“No, I ain’t, but we got to eat, so I thought, why not? Hey, does that rhyme? I don’t know, but is it a crime?” He looks at me, and I can feel myself starting to sweat. I try to remember what he had told me about himself. He was a teacher that taught English. Why was he talking like this?

“So, you are a teacher?” I ask him, hoping that I was remembering correctly.

“Yeah. I teach elementary school kids, but my real dream is to be a rapper. You know?”

“Oh, cool,” I say. “That’s interesting. You didn’t mention that.” Not that we talked for very long. I had just thought he looked really cute in his photos, and he had thought I’d look cute. And when I said I wouldn’t mind meeting tonight, he had jumped on it.

An image of Colton’s face pops into my mind at that moment. If he could see me right now with this guy, he’d be laughing, but I am not going to think about him. I am not going to think about how he told me to remember him eating me out on my date. I groan as I realize that that is exactly what I am thinking about.

“Hey, you okay? You just made a weird sound,” Zevo says, and I nod slowly.

“Yeah, I just was thinking to myself that I haven’t met many English teachers who are rappers on the side.”

“Yo, yo, yo. What’s up with that, right?” he says. And I stare at him.

“Oh my gosh,” I think to myself. What the hell is going on? “So, where are you from originally?” I ask him.

“Yo, I’m from Detroit. What up? Call out to all my homies in Detroit. Eminem, can you hear me? 50 Cent.”

I blink. “Oh, you know Eminem?”

“No.” He laughs. “But wouldn’t that be cool if I did?”

“Oh, yeah. Supercool. Eminem is like so cool,” I say, not knowing what else to say.

“He the man. Not like Kid Rock, yo. Kid Rock a solo. What? Am I right?”
