“Easy peasy.” Gage scoffed.

The idea was. The execution? “Not so much. I’ve never built an actual combat robot before.”

“You’ve designed them.” Gage seemed to read the rest of my thoughts. “You’ve analyzed them. You’ve studied them for years both for fun and to learn.”

“You don’t have to win any contests,” Sawyer said. “You just have to prove that your parts don’t fail, and showing an understanding of the sport will help, too. He’s not asking you to do this for free—he will provide a stipend for the parts and time.”

No. Really. Did I only dream of getting out of bed this morning? Was I still asleep? Did I start with a nightmare that became an intense fantasy? Would this conversation slide to both of them getting naked and ravaging me again? “That’s it? That’s the only catch.”

“One more thing.”

There it was. I should’ve expected that from Sawyer. “Of course there is. Do you want a blow job? Anal?”

He shrugged. “Almost always, especially if you’re offering. But in this case, for this, no. I want you to let Kurt help when possible.”

“Why?” Gage studied him suspiciously.

“I like the kid. He wants to learn, he loves the robots, and this is a good way to expose him to both.”

Damn it. Next thing I knew, Sawyer was going to be rescuing puppies and donating his car to charity.

I had so much to worry about with my store—the probable thief, the pending foreclosure—but I had done all I could on both of those things. Taking action on this was better than sitting on my thumbs waiting until I could act on more immediate concerns. And if this was everything Sawyer was describing… “I’m in.”

“Yes.” Gage actually fist pumped.

His enthusiasm made me feel better about the decision, like I wasn’t completely dumb for considering it.

“I’m at your disposal, whatever I can do to help,” Sawyer said.

Gage grinned. “Me too. Anything. Let’s make this happen.”

There was a weird feeling inside me. Familiar but one I hadn’t dared listen to for a while. Hope? I shouldn’t use up something like that on a situation like this, but I wanted it to work. I needed it to work.

Please let this work.

What was going on?

And why was I looking forward to it instead of being upset about it?

Not the news about helping Evie. Anything and everything I could do there, I was in. But Sawyer being so involved?

It didn’t feel right.

He went back to his hotel to clean up, do what he needed to for the day. Evie was going to leave me alone soon, so I could do the same.

Before I let her go I wanted her time, just the two of us.

We were sitting across the table from each other, sipping coffee. I couldn’t be the only one who felt a tension in the air that had never lingered between us before a week or two ago. I’d like to say before Sawyer, but fuck him, he didn’t get credit for everything.

Evie and I would get to a new normal though. We’d find that spot.

“How’d it go with the police yesterday?” I asked.

Her wry smile peeked over the top of her coffee mug. “Rohde was surprised you hadn’t already hauled Terrance in on my behalf. They agreed that if I had security footage, it would build a much stronger case, so as long as I’m being safe and smart about it, they’re going to give it a few days.”
