Tails.

“Physical.” As I announced our decision, my gut clenched.

The emcee turned to the other table. “Gentlemen, they picked the how, you pick the what. Pool, darts, or Street Fighter?”

Please don’t be Street Fighter. Adam could spend half an hour on a single game token.

There was a bowing of heads at the boys’ table as they had what I assumed was a similar discussion to ours, though the murmurs of Street Fighter were distinct.

“Darts,” Sawyer said, before anyone else could speak.

I hid my smirk, but Aubrey high-fived Ravyn, and the other men at Sawyer’s table groaned.

He looked at them, exuding that smugness I already hated. “I promise, I’ve got this, guys.”

Sawyer strode to join me in front of the dart board, with more swagger in his step than should be legal. He picked the game, so I got to choose who went first.

I moved aside and let him throw.

He was really good, landing all three shots near the center, including a bullseye.

As he moved out of my way, he paused next to me, and dropped his mouth to my ear. “Do any of your friends have any idea how desperate you are for cock?” he whispered.

I clenched my jaw and rage spilled inside. I didn’t even make it to the line before tossing all three darts, one at a time.

My entire table erupted in a massive cheer, as did most of the dining room, when I landed better shots than Sawyer.

I gave him a perfect smile. “They know I qualified expert as a marksman in the Marines,” I said in a normal voice. “Which means they know me better than you ever will.”

Sawyer turned away without a comment, while the emcee announced that we were the winners.

“Hey, drinks are on me.” Sawyer rejoined his table, just as Alys walked away from Adam.

Adam shook his head. “Nah, we’re good.”

And like that, the boys’ club broke up.

With the competition over for the night, people moved back to other things. Joystick insisted on singing me Happy Birthday when he brought out the cake The Nerd Herd ordered for me, and I couldn’t maintain my scowl through any of it.

This was fun.

As we all laughed and joked, I completely ignored Sawyer walking out of the building alone. Nope, didn’t notice him, not even for a second.

Aubrey pressed close to me, arm against mine, as we enjoyed cake and laughs. “You still have to give me your schedule,” she said softly. “And you still have to tell me why.”

I frowned.

“I’m trying to help.” She pointed out.

“I know.” I wasn’t upset with her, but the reminder that I was at the point where I needed that kind of help made my cake sit heavy in my stomach.

Sawyer

Who was hammering on my door at—I turned my head toward the clock on my nightstand—six in the fucking morning?

The noise stopped for a moment, then resumed again full force. “Sir. Haddarville police. Could you open the door?”
