“I’m fine.” This wasn’t me, and I needed to get a grip.

Evie’s huff said she didn’t believe me. Not that I blamed her. “Tell me, or I’ll keep asking,” she said.

I tried to hide another growl with a sigh. “Can we just make it to the parking lot?”

“Okay.” The way she clipped the word, she wouldn’t wait much longer before pushing the issue again.

I was overreacting, and I had less than five minutes to stop being a jealous ass. Knowing that and doing it were two vastly different things.

The one who got away.

Was I really going down that path? With my best friend? The woman who was my sanity and salvation over the last few years. Who had been there since we were kids.

I sure as fuck wasn’t going to sit back and watch her with some big city asshole who had no concept of how incredible Evie was.

I pulled into the parking lot, and as I put the SUV in park, she was twisting in her seat to face me. “Gage, just talk to me.”

Yeah. We should talk. I looked at her. Those eyes. That exasperation mixed with concern. The wet hair hanging around her face and the way her half-dry top still clung to her skin.

Fuck it. I cupped her cheeks between my palms, and my entire body roared in anticipation. When I found her mouth with mine, the thoughts vanished. The only things that existed were her and me. Her soft lips. The tiny sighs she was making. The taste of rain.

“Whoa.” Evie pressed a palm to my chest enough to break the kiss.

I didn’t want this to end. I needed more. “Do you want me to stop?”

Her pause was excruciating. Her, “No, I don’t want you to stop,” was my salvation.

I dipped my head to hers, kissing her again and again. Letting the pouring rain on the truck roof cut us off from the rest of the world. Nipping at her skin and swallowing her moans. This was more intoxicating than a good whisky. Better than…

There was no comparison.

“What is this?” Evie asked between kisses, but she didn’t try to stop me again.

I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to put a name to what we were doing. “Birthday present?” That was it. “Let me make this a fortieth birthday we’ll never forget.”

“With kisses?” Her laugh was light.

Not that I would mind, but I had something more all-consuming in mind. As in, I wanted all of her. I nipped her ear—the one Sawyer hadn’t whispered in. “With mind-blowing sex.”

“This is where I should protest, because sex ruins friendships.” She tilted her head, giving me easier access to her neck, as I kissed along her jaw.

I scraped my teeth over her skin. “Is that what you’re doing?”

Evie pulled away again, not from my touch, but I couldn’t kiss her anymore. “I don’t want you to look at me differently when we’re done,” she said.

“City Boy already pointed out how I look at you now.”

The corners of her mouth tugged up, I hoped at the nickname.

I trailed my fingers over her chest in a lazy X. “Cross my heart, this doesn’t change the way I feel about our friendship.” I dragged my thumb over her bottom lip, and her mouth parted in a silent gasp.

“You are hot.” Her voice was breathy, but there was a hint of I’m going to try to be rational about this in her voice that was so very Evie. “And a really good kisser. As long as you’re not bad in bed…”

“I’m not.”

“Big words, big man.” Her playfulness was back.

I was tempted to fuck her here. In the middle of the parking lot. “Room. Now.”
