“We’re not claiming humans. They’re not pets or the last piece of pie.” Who’d decided that was a thing? “Stefan is the type of person to want to understand about both sides of a situation, so he’ll have all kinds of friends once he’s more comfortable. But yes, he’s mine, so he’s on the dragon side of things.”

Just so there was no confusion about that.

Mr. Librarian belonged to me.

“Oh, that’s good. I was afraid we’d lost a smart one to the mages.” Lorne slouched back in the couch, letting out a deep breath. “Kenzie’s Daddy is smart in a lot of ways, but it’s not the same thing.”

Thankfully, the drama dragon wasn’t offended.

“He’s looking for my hiding places and it’s so much fun to see how his mind works.” Kenzie was nearly rubbing his hands together he was so deviously excited. “I’m hoping for a wonderful spanking when he realizes which ones he’s overlooked.”

I wasn’t up for Kenzie relationship logic, so I ignored it as I focused on Lorne. “Every one of the humans in town is special for one reason or another. But we’re not passing them out like party favors.”

“No, but we do get to claim them once we figure out who they’re supposed to be with, right?” Lorne was looking around at everyone like he was making sure he got to claim his human when he managed to find him.

“Of course.” Kenzie seemed very sure of his answer. “You get to keep the human that was designed for you.”

I wasn’t sure it was worth arguing the logic of that statement.

“He might have a mage or another dragon that was meant for him.” Alick’s helpful advice was accurate but unappreciated based on the groans that Kenzie and Lorne let out. “I’m just saying, he might not end up with a human.”

They didn’t want to hear that.

“Ignore him. Alick is just grumpy.” Kenzie reached over and patted Lorne’s head like he was a puppy. “We’ll find you a nice human.”

Was the human the puppy in this scenario?

“Boyd found one, so it can’t be that hard.” Kenzie didn’t seem to realize how that’d come across because he just kept going. “And Daddy found me just by walking up to the house to say hi. Yours is right around the corner, you’ll see.”

Had he been trying to give Lorne a pep talk or insult me?

Both?

Alick’s snicker said he agreed with both.

“Wait. We’ve gotten distracted.” Lorne straightened like he’d been stabbed in the ass with a fork. “We were supposed to ask about Boyd and Mr. Librarian.”

Great. Now they remembered.

“Yes, how was your date with Mr. Librarian?” Alick was the only one who understood how ridiculous that sentence was because he was trying not to giggle.

“You can’t say it was fine. That would be cheating.” Kenzie made that declaration just as I was getting ready to tell them it’d been fine.

“We had a good afternoon.” They wouldn’t accept that as the whole answer but it gave me time to start collecting my thoughts. “We had lunch and went to the bookstore. He saw my dragon and we explored a few things. But he’s not ready for me to tell you what we did, so don’t ask.”

They didn’t.

“Your dragon?” All three said it in unison like we were in a movie.

“Yes.” I wasn’t sure who I was addressing, so I just made it a general statement. “He wanted to see what I looked like that way and I think he wanted to make sure he hadn’t dreamed up the whole thing.”

“Yeah, I can see that.” Alick slowly nodded as he looked like he was trying to imagine how it’d happened.

“You gotnakedfor Mr. Librarian.” Lorne giggled as he went right to the silly part.

Kenzie was still stuck on the dragon part. “On your first date?”

Considering the grief I’d given him for rushing into everything with his Daddy, he probably had a right to be surprised. “Yes, Stefan made it clear that he was curious about it and I didn’t want to tell him no. That seemed like it would send the wrong message.”
