Was I a sub?

I certainly wasn’t the same type as they were…they were very confident and giggly.

I didn’t have any idea about where to start to respond to Alick, but they were all looking at me expectantly since Alick had actually explained what was going on.

“I…” I was the librarian. I could do this. “I’m not sure what the expectations would be and where I fit into the dynamics of your group, but thank you for inviting me.”

I thought that sounded very polite, but Kenzie leaned toward Alick and dropped his voice. “Is that a yes he’ll come play or a no because he doesn’t know he’s a sub?”

“Both, I think?” Alick joined his friends in frowning at me. “Do you know you’re a sub?”

Oh dear.

The questions I was asked just kept getting weirder and weirder.

“Um, Kenzie has been thoughtful in requesting the library add reading material that’s greatly expanded my knowledge of relationships, but I don’t…I don’t have any personal background in…in playing.” That hadn’t come out quite right but nothing else better came to mind.

As Alick and Lorne just kind of blinked at me, Kenzie gave me a beaming smile and, well, didn’t look human any longer. “I’m glad you liked the books I showed you. Let’s start there. Did you like the one where the sub liked to play with Legos and things like action figures? Did you like the sub who dressed up pretty? Oh, what about the sub that likes bottles and binkies and diapers?”

Now I was the one standing there blinking.

As Kenzie waited for an answer to what he seemed to think were very reasonable questions, Alick stepped in. “You don’t need to know your favorite right off the bat. But if they made you curious and you like the idea of someone taking care of you, maybe you’d like to come hang out and play?”

That…that was easier to digest.

“I like desserts.” I thought that was a stupid starting point, but Kenzie thought I was brilliant based on his smile.

“Me too. I love baking but you can’t live on cake alone…or even brownies…so I’m very glad my Daddy can cook and I love the way he plays with me. He’s very funny.” Nodding seemed to encourage him, but I could understand what he’d said without feeling nervous. “What kind of help would you like from a Daddy or a Dom?”

Was it like a weird game ofWhat Ifor was this like ordering from a take-out menu?

Oh, could they order Doms like they were getting delivery?

No, there wouldn’t be as many single people in town as there currently were if everyone could order up the perfect boyfriend or mate or whatever their partners were called.

“Um, I…” Was I just supposed to ramble off things I liked in a man?

“What kind of quality in a man do you like that’s been kind of hard to find?” Lorne had finally stopped giggling long enough to be helpful, but I wished he’d just kept laughing.

“I…” Was I supposed to be honest about that? I helped people find things. It wasn’t supposed to be the other way around. “I don’t know.”

It wasn’t exactly honest and I could see they realized that, but they didn’t point it out specifically. Kenzie was giving me a look that said he was disappointed in me, though. “We want to be your friend, Mr. Librarian. You’re lonely and even Daddy said he thought you’d fit in with us.”

Because he thought I was some kind of sub?

Because he thought I could handle being around the local creatures?

“I might?” Swallowing, I hated the idea of upsetting them even though I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to say. “I…I had a boyfriend in college who would read to me. I…I liked that, but he…but he only wanted to read me mysteries and thrillers.”

Kenzie scrunched up his face like he’d tasted something bad. “That sounds stressful.”

Alick and Lorne nodded along with him, but it was Alick who read between the lines better. “And there are lots of fun kids’ books. You need a Daddy who would pick out fun books for you.”

Their heads all moved up and down, and I found myself mirroring them before I’d realized what I was doing.

“You know.” Lorne paused and got a wicked smile on his face. “Boyd likes reading.”

I must’ve gone five different shades of red judging by the way they were all snickering. “I’m…I’m sure he’d like someone a bit…”
