His eyes widened and he had to swallow a few times before words came out. “Which…which would you prefer?”

“Either, honestly, but I think the easiest way to start might be with the reading idea. It feels like it would be less stressful for you, but that might be me overthinking it.” Stefan seemed like the type to need time to warm up to the more sexual side of a scene, but I waited not so patiently as he slowly nodded.

“I…That makes sense.” The nodding continued as he processed the idea or whatever was running through his head. “The…your friends didn’t make it sound scary.”

Thank goodness for cheerful oversharers?

“I’m glad. I know this is new and I don’t want to push you into anything that sounds scary.” I couldn’t help letting a bit of heat show and it sent a shiver through him. “But making you a bit nervous could be fun.”

Blink.

Blink.

“Like…like the way some people enjoy scary movies? That…that adrenaline rush?”

Smart men were very sexy…and curious ones were off the chart.

“Yes, just like that.” Slowly running one hand along my thigh, I tried to keep how new he was to the lifestyle at the front of my mind. “The anticipation of a spanking or a scene might make you feel a lot of different emotions but not the bad kind of fear. I want you worked up and shaking with desire as I tease you with your first spanking, not fear.”

“I…I might be a little bit worried.” That soft confession almost made me smile but I didn’t want him to think I was laughing at him. “But…but that’s to be expected.”

It was.

“We just need to do our best to establish good communication so that there are no misunderstandings.” Wanting to make sure he understood what I meant, I teased him a bit. “I’m a dragon but not a psychic.”

Stefan frowned and a tiny pout escaped. “Oh, you can’t read minds or anything? I was hoping I just hadn’t done it right to make it work.”

He was disappointed thedragonin front of him couldn’t read his mind?

“Well, technically it’s possible between mates but it’s not something that happens on a regular basis.” Mostly because it’d been a long time since more than a handful of dragons each generation had found their mate.

“Really?” Stefan squirmed excitedly and I could almost see his little side peeking out. “Is information on that in the restricted section?”

“Yes. I think so.” Frowning, I ignored how cute he was and tried to remember the books in that area. “I don’t know what’s in there exactly. I took a field trip there when I was a kid, but it’s not part of my council duties or something that I was focused on personally.”

Stefan’s expression volleyed between disappointment and acceptance.

“But we can look together once I get the right person to fix the door.” And to figure out what had gone wrong to begin with. “That’s a priority.”

And the smile was back.

“That’s wonderful.” His smile started out innocent and eager before his cheeks started to get redder. “Maybe…maybe at some point, we could look at the room together…not like as a work thing but as a…you know, a…”

As his voice trailed off and he licked his lips, I did my best to finish his sentence. “As a date?”

His adorable head bob and the way excitement was radiating from him would’ve been an amazing ego boost if I wasn’t completely sure his eagerness was about the books, not me.

But I got blushes and nervous squirms, so I was definitely making progress.

Chapter 7

Stefan

Grown-up book dates sounded wonderful…but little book dates made me want to squirm, and I couldn’t decide if that was a good thing or not.

“What…what if I’m not good at the…at the times we’re both not supposed to be big?” I probably should’ve waited to ask that until after we’d gone on at least one regular date but it seemed too important to put off.

What if I couldn’t be little?
