There is no missing the curiosity in her irises, and by the tone of her voice, I know precisely what she’s asking.Whoshe’s asking about.

“Me? Nothing, just busy with…” I shrug, pick up a rag, and start to clean the already spotless working surface. Anything to avoid Sav’s intense gaze. Not that it helps. I can feel it probing into me on the side of my face. “Well, everything.”

“Mhmm… Does that everything include your ex-boyfriend?”

My hand bumps into the glass that’s sitting on the counter, and it falls on the floor, shattering loudly and drawing attention from the few patrons sitting in the café.

“Shit.”

Savannah laughs. “If you’ve decided to smash things, it must be bad.”

“It fell.”

Not that the idea of smashing something into Lauren and Mary Sue didn’t cross my mind, but…

I look around until I spot the broom in the corner. I carefully jump over the glass to grab it and start cleaning up the mess I made.

Looking at the million shattered pieces on the ground makes me unsettled. It almost feels like an ominous premonition of sorts.

“Yeah, yeah, so what’s going on with the football hottie? I still can’t believe you dated a professional football player and hadn’t mentioned him once in all the time we’ve hung out!”

And I wanted it to stay that way, but apparently, my wish wouldn’t come true thanks to all the gossip going around this town.

“He wasn’t a professional football player when we were together. And I didn’t mention him because there was nothing to say. Miguel and I broke up ages ago,” I mutter, hoping that if I brush it off as something insignificant, she’ll drop the subject, but I should’ve known better.

Savannah gives me a pointed look. “That’s not how it looked to me the other day in The Hut,” she sing-songs, leaning closer to me. “The guy ran after you like the prince after Cinderella. That hardly screams done to me. So? What gives?”

“Are you already getting in the role for when the kids come?”

Savannah runs a monthly book club for kids here at the Reading Nook.We had three groups, and the youngest ones were supposed to come today.

Can’t they hurry up already?

As if she can read my mind, Sav shoots me a knowing glare.

“Your evasive skills suck, Rebecca. Now spill. I don’t want to find out everything from the gossip rags.”

“I was just surprised to see him there, that’s all.”

“How long has it been since you guys saw each other?”

Three years, five months, and thirteen days.

Not like I was counting or anything.

“A few years.”

“So?” She nudges me with her hand.

“So what?”

“How does it feel to see your ex back in town?”

Annoying. Overwhelming. Unsettling.

It was like no matter where I went, he was there, and I couldn’t escape him no matter how hard I tried. And then there was yesterday and that damn kiss.

I bite the inside of my cheek.
