My gaze meets hers, observing those long eyelashes as they fan over the line of her cheekbones. The way the color drains from that pretty pink mouth—a mouth I’ve kissed a thousand times before—because of how hard she’s pressing her lips together.

Seeing her this close stirs something inside of me.

Something I haven’t felt in so long I almost forgot what it was.

Lust.

“This isn’t done yet,” I rasp out, my fingers wrapping around the strap of my backpack to stop myself from reaching for her.

Not bothering to say anything else, I turn on the balls of my feet and go toward the door.

That damn bell jingles loudly as I step into the scorching afternoon heat, beads of sweat forming on my face instantly. Still, I force myself to breathe in the fresh air, hoping it’ll help me clear my mind.

Your friends. You’re here for your friends, so you can stand by them as they get their happily ever after. That’s it.

But no matter how many times I repeat it, I can’t erase her scent from my head, nor can I forget the way her hand felt in mine.

A perfect match.

A missing piece.

Fitting, considering she broke my heart and didn’t even bother to look back.

CHAPTER EIGHT

REBECCA

“Rebecca!”

Miguel’s rushed footsteps pound against the ground as he chases after me, but I don’t dare turn around.

I keep my head low as I run through the woods, hot tears burning my eyelids as I try to navigate the dark space around me.

I was so sick of all of this.

Of him.

Why did it have to be him, of all people?

Whoever thought falling for your best friend is sweet and perfect never had to deal with Miguel Luis Fernandez and his bullshit.

A tear slides down my cheek. Huffing in irritation, I wipe it away with the back of my hand.

I’ll not be crying over that stupid man, not any lo—

Miguel’s hand wraps around my wrist as he tugs me back to him.

“This isn’t done yet,” he growls, those chocolate eyes burning brightly even under the dim moonlight. They’re the last thing I see before my back connects to the hard surface of the nearby tree, and his mouth crashes on mine.

I suck in a sharp breath as I startle awake. My heart is beating wildly inside my ribcage as I look around, trying to orientate myself.

My room.

I’m in my room, and everything that happened was just a dream.

I let my body relax into the pillow as I run my hand over my face, feeling the sweat clinging to my skin.

Well, I guess not everything.
